Went out to the pond this morning and sat on the west side overlooking a small corn field. It was a nice morning but seeing nothing. About 6:45 decided to rattle. 5 minutes later this guy comes in from the NE. Walks in to about 10 yards, and I take a severe down angle shot at him. Don't remember how I anchored, or anything. It just went way too quickly.
After that arrow stuck in the ground, he ran only a few yards off, but only got a bit nervous about it. So I nocked another and let him continue south toward the trail that goes around the pond. (which I should have let him do before sinking an arrow in the ground) 2 weeks ago, I cut a nice shooting lane to that trail. Sure enough he walks right into it. Take a deep breath, make sure I am anchoring properly and release. Runs off and I hear him fall. Only went 50 yards with a double lung shot.
The night before, I saw 2 bucks with some good mass chasing a doe all over, through a flock of turkeys and everything. They were on the far east side of the pond. Probably 200 yards from my stand, but I could tell from that far away that one was pretty big. Thought briefly about not shooting today because of what I saw yesterday, but there is no guarantee that I will ever see them again. That, and last year, I had to eat my buck tag.
This guys has a big body, just not big rack. 9 pointer if you count the 2 crab claw points on one side. Crab on the other side is broken off though. Has very similar characteristics as the nice one I got a few years ago, and of sheds I found last year. Cool to see that the same genes are staying around.
