When O2 levels drop the pilot size gets smaller. When the pilot is small it affects the thermocouple and will shut down the propane supply, thus turning off the heater. Thermocouples measure temperature, which in this case is affected by O2 levels. So in a roundabout way, I suppose you could say there is an O2 sensor.
