Ground is almost covered, wouldn't take long to rake up a bushel. I should go check the Swamp White oaks, as I'd rather collect and plant more of them.



 
Some mast trees go every other year. Not sure if that is part of it. Also, last summer was pretty dry, then a really wet spring, but back to the dry again. The lack of rain this summer might be why they are smallish, but good spring weather probably caused a good set of acorns.
 
I have a bur oak tree that I planted about four years ago when it was a sapling, and I was surprised that it had some acorns on it this year. I always thought it was supposed to take 20-30 years before they start getting acorns, but that might just be for red and white oaks. I've got the bur oak in my yard and the deer always seem to rub on it every fall, so I put four fence posts around it and two heights of cages that I made out of old fence. How long do some of you usually leave protection around the trees? All the trees I've planted in the yard during the past five years have at least a couple of fence posts around them.

Stress will also cause them to have acorns. Although healthy bur oaks can also produce at that age along with swamp white oaks. Regular white oaks (quercus alba) seems to take longer. Get any oak out of timber competition and it will not be 20-30 years for production.
