Busted pond

Not really a pond but I suppose so. This is in the middle of a shallow water wetland. Originally built to hold it looks like 3 ft of water. Last summer I noticed part of the bottom berm eroded away. I piled loads of fill there to patch it..attempt anyways. Still some leaking...guessing I didn't get it packed down well. Also no clay to speak of in this area. Wasn't designed really to be a pond but more to hold some water for whatever wetland critter cares to take advantage.

After that ramble...I want to keep water in the pond so the area below the pond stays dryer and I can actually do something with it. If I don't have any clay or material to actually hold the water...would it even make sense to have a dozer come it and rebuild the sides with what's there. Or just a referral to a specialist is my next step

It most likely needs a core trench under the dam (NRCS specs are at least 4' deep x 10' wide below original ground). This is to ensure the water doesn't leak out or at least reduce the chances of it leaking. Any signs of sand or sand vanes should be dug out. Filling the trench back in and building the dam with high clay soils is ideal.
What will you do if it does fill past dam capacity/overflows? Let it run around one end, install a principal spillway pipe metal/plastic, install an intake in one corner with a tile outlet are all possibilities.

I'm guessing this area doesn't have much drainage area. Depending on how much you want to spend, you may just want to go with the bentonite as a cheaper option for now; it may indeed solve the issue.

No drainage at all. I'll look into bentonite.

Go have TRUSTED guy with dozer & excavator check it out. I’ve busted em down, cleaned em out, made deeper in a day or 2 with those small ones.
