[ QUOTE ]
Piebalds are not illegal to harvest in Iowa. I called the DNR in Des Moines and they looked up the law and it states, any deer can have up to 50% white and be legal 51% white would make it illegal. My local DNR officer looked at him and said it was a legal deer.. Im still trying to get a photo posted...
Technically, days are numbered/dead are two different things. He was rumored to be shot but never recovered. Now he is the stuff of legends. How big would you say he is 180's????
Yup, that horse (if it was a deer) would be legal in Iowa.
Does anybody remember the story of the guy (Des Moines area?) that shot an all white deer. If I recall the story (as reported in the paper), he was out hunting and this all white deer and a nice buck came running up. The quote I remember is him saying that "I can shoot a nice buck any time, an all white deer is a once in a lifetime chance". I think this was the basis for public outcry that brought the "predominantly white deer" law to the books. Correct me if I've got my facts wrong here, it's been a long time and I have been know to have a revisionist's view of history (when it serves me)
So what happens when a person shoots the 49ish% white deer? I think that if one splashes pictures everywhere you are more likely to fall under the critical eye of law enforcement. Unfortunately, their eye might become more critcial as the racks score increases.
It all comes down to a judgement call in the field, where it is usually better to err on the side of conservatism.
You can tell the law was wrote by a politician not a hunter. If its not albino, it should be legal. Thats how the law should be wrote. If it were up to me we could shoot them to.
