Man Saves Son, Fights Off Bear With Stick

A 77-year-old man from Grande Cache, Alberta saved his son from a protective mother bear attack by beating the animal off with a walking stick.

Tom Wanyandie and his son James were taking a hike through the woods last Saturday looking for moose antlers to form into pieces of art when they encountered the bear and her cub. The bear lunged at James, and with no time to react, Tom attacked back.

"I was thinking about God and that he would protect us," Tom said to Canada’s National Post. "With God in my head, I took that walking stick and beat the bear, then I shoved it down his throat."

Tom suffered from a broken arm and several cuts and bruises, but his son is alive, thanks to his heroic efforts.

"He was a brave man. Not many people could fend off a bear like that," James said. "We'll probably go back into the woods together when we heal."

Man, I hear ya there! I dont have much of a problem where I hunt in northern Minnesota just because our bears are hunted pretty heavy and will avoid a person for the most part. But I do get nervous when on a late spring Canadian shed hunt in the middle of no-where, or an October deer hunt. I've had 3 incidents where I've been extremely close to sows with cubs. One time in the dark I even walked inbetween a sow and her cubs. Another time I crawled up into my tree stand in the pre-dawn dark and heard something rustling around in the tree. I shined my flashlight above me and there were two cubs above me in the same tree. I about had a heart attack right there. Just then the sow "woofed", and them cubs tore down the tree. I thought one was going to end up in my cacoon with me. Another time I had a sow pacing 30-40 yards away for 15 minutes, all the while popping her teeth at me while I changed batteries in a trail camera. I finally seen the cubs in a tree behind me. That sow was really, really mad and made plenty of noise to show it. Only some hair raising encounters so far but nothing real serious....,yet!
By the way, so far this spring, there have been close to a dozen bear attacks across Canada.

I hear that, a couple years ago I was living in west central Alberta right in Griz/black bear and cougar country in the early archery season. Scary walking down a bush trail the darkness. Now I'm just dealing with the blacks.

And all we have to worry about in Iowa is spooking deer on the way to the treestand. That bear thing is a whole other issue. All of us would give our lives to protect our kids, just glad he didn't have to and will survive to live another day.
