chinkapin oaks

Doing a walk through with my district forester yesterday we found some small chinkapin oaks. He explained that this type of oak has very low tanin and produces a sweet acorn mast. "It's like icecream for deer." he says. So needless to say I am going search high and low for the mature trees on my property and it may just pay of in aces this fall. Just another piece to the puzzle of success.

So how exactly do you identify them? Do they grow in the northern parts of the state? Maggs

Okios Nursery carries many low tannin "sweet" acorn producing oaks in both hybrid and standard species, including regular and Dwarf Chinkapin Oaks.

I try to plant a few oaks every year...eventually I'll have some of everything.

Note: what a deer considers "sweet" and what I do are two very different versions!
