Cleaning up after the coyotes?

I was just curious about your thoughts about eating deer meat after some of the carcass has been eaten by coyotes and other scavengers? Would you avoid this because of cross-contamination or is it safe?

Speaking for myself... I am not that hungry!

There are a lot of deer in the timber that are fresh and healthy, just right for the eating. No sense chancing it eating carrion.

QDM,
I had that happen to me in 99. Cut the bad out and ate the rest... Nothin wrong wit me...

All kidding aside the meat was fine. I hate to waste any meat.

seriously though I'm with Daver go shoot a doe that is healthy and hasn't been munched on by the oty's.

This was my deer as I found it Saturday morning after shooting the deer just before dark on Friday. If I would of known I had a double lung shot a would of got him out that night. I didn't keep any of the meat because who knows what else could of been chewing on my deer.

JC Walker, I don't think I would've kept any meat from that deer either, espescially with all of those guts being ripped open. I think you did the right thing.

A freind at work was hunting Illinois this year & his buddy wacked a good buck aroun 8:30 in the morning, he got the outfitter & they went to get him at noon. He didn't have to worry about eating what was left, all that was left was hide, bones & one front shoulder. There wasn't even enough cape left to get it mounted. I couldn't believe the pictures he showed me, if I get one I'll post it.

I would pass on the meat for that one. On another note it had a nice rack. I hope you can at least salvage that.

I shot a doe and she had her guts ripped out within 15 mins of shooting her. We watched the coyote go on the same trail as the doe right after I shot her.

Once the stomach and guts are ripped open and that bacteria is exposed to the rest of the deer I'd not touch it. If just some of the hindquarters were tenderized I MIGHT think about salvaging some of it...that or donating it to the feed a prisonor foundation.
