My son and I went out tonight and we almost came up with a real knockout, almost!
We had good action all evening and then a little forky stepped out of the timber and I told my son to stand up and watch him, many times a bigger buck will follow the little guys out. Sure enough, a real beauty was just a few steps behind him! He came right to us and my son nicked the edge of the ladder stand when he drew, the buck was broadside at 18 yards! Let's just say they don't get that big by standing around figuring out what that noise was... he turned and blew out of there in a heartbeat. He was a 5 x 4 and the tine length was spectacular, I am sure he would gross at least right around 170", his left G4 was at least 8". He had a tall, but fairly narrow rack, decent mass, long main beams, but his calling card was tine length, G2's were 13"-14", G3's 11"-12", etc.
All in all, a very eventful night, I never even stood or attempted to draw on him, I let my son have a make or break moment and let's just say that even though it didn't work out for him he is ready to go back at it! I am almost glad he didn't get him, it would be awful big first bow buck for a 14 year old, he might be spoiled for life after that. Now I am thinking I should have whacked him, but oh well, the next two weeks should be pretty good.
