Coyote or Wolf????

A friend of mine told me that he talked to a neighboring farmer about 2 miles away and he swears that he saw a black wolf in November. I guess the only way to prove it is to get a better picture!

On another note, I live 10 miles from the Iowa border so maybe he has crossed over into your territory now? LOL

I have only seen a handful of wolves in the wild. I have seen a lot of their tracks in this area of Minnesota, they are pretty common here and have become a serious problem for the livestock farmers around here. The more I look at your pic the more I am convinced that you have a picture of a wolf. Particularly when you added the photo of the buck. It really looks like that canine is probably in the 100-pound range. Also the lighter-colored band around the shoulders and the longer fur on the shoulders. That is a fairly common characteristic of wolves. I would love for you to get another pic that would shed some more light on the situation. THoguht about puting out any bait for canines? If it is a local animal it will probably be back for another pic if you put something there to attract him. If it is a wolf you will probably never see him again as he may be MILES away by now.

I do have a good sized bait pile out right now (armed with a Cuddeback) and I have been "patiently" waiting for this weekend to get here to check it. We are supposed to get some snow in the next day or two so I am sure that will increase the activity around the bait pile.

Again, I am HOPING to get another pic of the animal, but I am not counting on it.

From Alaskans gallery...pretty similar

I've seen quite a few wolves in my day and I'm saying you've got your self a dark phase coyote. The feet on the dog in your picture to me cry......NOT WOLF. Who knows but I'd place my fairly educated guess on the song dog.
