Chipping away at it. Why won't one of them just get the stones to try to get them in archery season and see what happens?
So now if All this stuff passes during the late season you can be on stand with a cross bow and an AR pistol with a stock or brace or whatever it is. The combinations could be endless.

Any data out there regarding how many are taken (or how many hunt) with crossbow during late muzzleloader vs number taken (or how many hunters hunt) with muzzleloader? And compared to years prior to crossbows being allowed?
Also, a concise list of concerns for this bill would be nice for people wanting to email the subcommittee. I'm seeing these as possible concerns:
Access issues - shotgun or muzzy hunters switching to crossbow, possibly limiting access for bow only hunters during that season (early split if it goes there in the future)
Safety issues - more hunters in field at the same time, no requirement for blaze orange with bow tag
More deer shot/drain on resource - due to increased range than traditional or compound bow
Increased wounding rates - if hunter takes shots they may not have if using traditional or compound bow because they believe the crossbow will shoot farther/better

Some very interesting statistics in this article from Field and Stream - surprising me a little since they have lots of advertising from Crossbows
Some states that have allowed Crossbow in regular season are rethinking this decision and considering reverting to the old way.

#1 issue is that crossbows are just exponentially easier with way farther range. Also, since they are scoped they can be shot in very low light conditions leading to more illegal practices. Everything is society is just moving towards being easy. Not everything should be easy. Hunting should be a challenge. A fun challenge. Crossbows make things a lot less challenging and extend the range of "archery" hunting by a TON. My #1 reason is quality of deer hunting. That's it. Bottom line, Iowa is the best state in the WORLD for whitetails for a reason. You start chipping away at the reasons why and over time we will be just like every other place.... not that special. KEEP IOWA HUNTING GREAT. That is my reason. Anything else is a distant distant second. Just my 2c.

Hey Gents. I'm new to your forum. I am from Maryland. Just decided to join trying to learn a little more about Iowa hunting and Iowa in general. The company I've been employed with for 18 yrs has a few openings here and there in DesMoines. Considering relocating to the Midwest. I've just had enough of the east coast and Maryland's liberal/socialist ways. Anyway.....
We went through this here in Maryland back in 2005. Prior to that year crossbows were only permitted with a waiver from a Dr. In 2005 they made a crossbow season starting Oct15 running through the rest of archery, our archery back then started Sept 15. The following year they made crossbows legal the entire archery season.
I live 10 minutes from a large BassPro. The crossbow section was a madhouse. My archery only honey holes were overrun with people with camo jackets and bluejeans walking aimlessly around the woods. IMO it was a disaster but DNR looked at it as more hunters in the woods the better. At that point the deer population in Md was insane!
I will say I think the majority of those new crossbow hunters gave up rather quickly once they realized using a crossbow didn't make killing a deer as easy as they thought it would be. Let's face it you still have to use some basic woodsmanship skills.
Its not as bad as it was back in 2005/6 but the public land archery areas definitely have more hunters and if you go to one I'd say 75% of the guys you see are using crossbows.

The results of a crossbow survey done by the National Deer Alliance a couple of weeks ago. Seems like lots of hunters surveyed were looking for “the easy way”.
“Last week, we asked NDA members about their opinions on hunting with crossbows. While NDA takes no position on what legal method hunters use to pursue deer, we were interested in your opinions on an issue that is currently being considered by the Wisconsin DNR regarding the effectiveness of today's crossbows, and their appropriateness during archery seasons.
A clear majority of respondents (67%) indicated that they either already hunt with, or would consider hunting with a crossbow, and that same percentage of people believe that they should remain legal hunting equipment during archery seasons. When we dug into the reasons behind the responses, we learned that 60% are fine with crossbows being used during the entire archery season, and that just under 40% feel crossbows are archery equipment, and that they have increased hunting opportunities. Only 13% feel that crossbows are too effective to be used during archery season.
When it comes to those who hunt with other weapons, we learned that only 9% hunt with both a compound bow and crossbow, and less than 1% hunt with a traditional bow and a crossbow. I am writing you in regards to HSB163 which is a proposed bill further allowing use of crossbows. I love all things whitetail. I love creating habitat for them thru native grass & tree plantings, timber stand improvement, and food plot creation. I simply love to hunt, but I hate this bill and others like it. Every year there are bills introduced that threaten Iowa's great hunting tradition. State after state across the country has degraded their hunting quality by changing/adding season and weapons. Iowa is the cream of the crop as a whitetail state but that is constantly under attack by special interest groups that want more more more. Some common sense conservation needs to start becoming the prevailing thought. KEEP IOWA GREAT. Stop adding seasons, more tags, more weapons, etc. I moved to Iowa in 2014 because Iowa is the best place in the WORLD for whitetail deer hunting. Let's keep it that way. In addition to people asking me why I would make such a “crazy” move, the most common question I get asked is why is Iowa so much better for whitetails than anywhere else? I explain to people that a lot of places have good nutrition and genetics, but they are not Iowa. The most important thing that separates Iowa from everybody else is how they have historically managed the deer heard over the years. I tell people that if you could make the laws and regulations to produce a world class deer heard that is pretty much what Iowa has done. Limit NR licenses, don’t have an open firearm season during the rut, do not allow the use of rifles, do not allow crossbow’s during archery season, etc. All these things have made for a deer herd that is the best in the world. I have hunted throughout the midwest and beyond . I wanted to move to the best place in the country. I decided on Iowa.
I truly hope the Iowa Legislature & DNR have enough sense to look around and not become "just another state". Please stop this bill in it's tracks. It is not needed and will only degrade the quality of hunting that we have here in Iowa that is the envy or the rest of the country.
