Now that the snow geese are moving through central Iowa pretty well we got out for a quick weekend hunt. On Saturday we had a NW wind so we weren't expecting much but we figured we'd do a quick morning hunt and then switch the blinds and spread after for Sunday. Only two of us showed up on time and we finished getting everything ready. As we were waiting for the rest of the guys we had a small flock get up off the water in the field we were hunting. It was shooting hours and we hadn't even managed to have our guns out of the cases and loaded yet. We rushed and managed to knock down 4 with 6 shots. This was the only flock we saw the rest of the day and we set up for the next morning.
We hoped Sunday would treat us well with the South winds and birds migrating through. Once again we had people arrive late however we managed to get everyone ready before shooting. As we entered the field we bumped quite a few birds off the flooded portion of the field. We figured that was a possibility since the wind had switched directions Saturday evening. We got settled in and realized we still had a few snows sitting on the water about 100 yards away. It was fun to get some young ones out in the blinds too.
The birds got up and we managed to knock down 6 or so. The rest of the day treated us with non stop action. We were dealing with weary adult birds so some finished and some did not. We ended up harvesting 29 birds including the 2 blues we shot as we were picking up.
