CWD

ii

now that its here we don't know the damage it will do to early to tell . it wasn't every where in iowa and still isn't in the 60s it was only out west
Telling the DNR about a sickly deer is arguably more dangerous for you than actually eating a deer with CWD.

Trust the $cience !!!
trust the science lol they thought mad cow disease wouldn't cross the barrier either but it did .

They said they’d stop at 120.. cmon guys, you can trust the government.

(Not my county but my neighbor was accidentally sent this from another area in MO).

Garbage.

They've changed the verbiage from the letters I've received in the past. It's a nice touch stating how many deer they want to remove and what that equates to be in DPSM.

Used to be try and kill as many as you or we can during the targeted culling dates.

The “I won’t eat the meat” … bothers me….. that’s a super fast way to scare hunters off & say “I quit, don’t wanna eat the meat” or “I quit cuz we shot all the deer & see none!”

I am NOT minimizing your feelings if u feel the disease could get to a human. Im not an expert there & would feel awful if it happened…. Yet, no data that shows it does.
REAL DATA on DEATHS from food bourn illnesses in produce (CDC data) is: 3,000 deaths per year & 48 million sick. Is there anyone on here that’s scared of produce? U should be far more concerned with produce over CWD with zero data IMHO. *LIFE is dangerous & there’s a gazillion ways to die. Not minimizing anything but one of those gazillion things IS GOING TO GET YOU.

Here’s my BIG CONCERN witb CWD…. Millions are sent to iowa from fed grants each year to TEST!! KILL & TEST!!! As far as I know, $0 in funding for researching a cure or studying resistance. I think ISU is looking into that some. How federal $ works… the state wants that $ to keep coming!!! That’s jobs & departments that the $ keeps coming into the state. If they stop testing, funding gets cut. As a gov agency, you don’t want that! So, u keep testing. YET- with a prion that, according to them, stays in soil FOREVER & can be transmitted by crows, moving hay, coyotes, etc etc. You can kill every deer & have 0 for 100 years - without a cure or resistance- all for NOTHING. WI spent 10’s to 100’s of millions on this & did NOTHING.
Oklahoma, right or wrong- took a different approach, instead of 10’s to 100’s of millions in killing…. Released deer that “can live to old age with CWD”.
Iowa will not take MO’s approach of sharp shooters on corn piles or wiping the deer out. Or WI’s approach. We know what doesn’t work. IMHO- every drop of $ & effort needs to be devoted to a cure or resistance- PERIOD.

i can agree with what you said monies never goes in the right places. thanks for explaining things finally someone knows what their talking about. Merry christmas to all .

Typical government BS. Spend allocated money to maintain a program for a problem that’s minimal. The problem in these cases is extreme measures are taken, kill all the deer, for program self preservation. Rolling back government programming is difficult.

In a former "Hot Zone" on the MO side in Mercer County. The buck that tested positive (and still only positive found in that area) looked healthy as can be and was mature. Before knowing about CWD, no one would have bat an eye to not eat that deer or suspect something was wrong with it.

It's still the only positive to have been found, but that one buck did get us a bounty of tags to use to make sure to keep deer #'s low. Is that going to fix or solve the problem? Depends on who you ask. I've never tested a deer from my farm and continue to shoot/eat those deer without concern after the positive found 1/2 mile from me. Some day they may find a direct correlation to cwd postive deer consumed and CJD in humans. I doubt I'm here long enough to see a discernable difference either way....

The 10 extra tags provided to landowners after that positive case was found are still given out yearly to be used during a season with legal weapon for that season.
I owned farm in North mercer also & experienced the same thing with tags. Before the tags, the MDC called me to see if they could go & kill deer off my farm in late January thru March timeframe. Baiting w/ corn, cell camera, shooting any time of day or night.

I asked the guy calling if he hunted & would let ppl do this on his land? He wouldn’t directly answer me but said I understand & I’m just doing my job & required to call you. He knew where I stood.

Also two of my neighbors 4-5 years ago allowed MDC to put corn out & shoot deer at night. That area had so many 3 & 4 year old bucks soon to be 4 & 5 - that age structure went drastically down after this fiasco of MDC mgmt.
I found double digit dead deer on one of those farms in March- April timeframe ( it was for sale & I was considering it)

Also several dead bucks with their antlers cut off presumably from the sharp shooters???

There were Many deer within 100-150 yards of their baiting station- my guess is if the deer didn’t drop after the shot, & ran away the shooters did not bother looking for the deer.

I would strongly advise if you care about the deer, hunting & habitat in your area you think twice about reporting this to the DNR.
Once they start The results can be very difficult to overcome & will take years to get it back to where it was. It all boils down to $$$ for the MDC or DNR agencies.
