Dad got a tag for 3rd season and hunted for the first time this afternoon. Him and mom went up to the haybale blind late this afternoon waiting for the birds to come back to roost. I had been up in this area all week working on planting trees and had jumped a flock of birds, with a few toms in it, so we knew one of us would be up there this night. Well dad beat me up there and sat for over 2 hours with just deer infront of them. Then around 7 they had a lone tom come into the field a ways behind them. Dad hit the slate call, the birds gobbled back a few times and once he saw the decoys it was game over! Dad said he came in spitting and drumming and went bumping right up to the decoys... which dad had put at bow range! So at ~10yds dad smoked the tom!
Here you can see the path the bird took in. He showed up in the field toward the back and walked the grassy road down past the blind and right into the decoy spread. We've killed many deer and turkeys walking down that road

Got home and started cleaning the bird. First thing we noticed was how beat up it was. Fan broken, many feathers broken, holes/wounds in his thighs, etc. Then I noticed he only had two toes on his one foot. Dad shot a handicapped bird.
Then we got to see the damage done from the shotgun at such close range, I stuck my finger in the hole in the neck and it was blasted clean through!
