Well, the other day I did a quick search for sheds. I was just getting done and I threw my shed antler I always take with me out and I spotted in the grass what looked to be an antler but I wasn't sure. Walked down to pick up my antler and I noticed it in the corner of my eye there was a antler. So I walked over to it and saw it was a dead Buck...

I call the landowner and ask him if he knew of anyone hunting the ground (there was a treestand 200 yards away) well, I guess there's a treestand every 200 yards away. He has atleast 12 stands set up on this place. Well, about 5mins later I get a call and he asks me what it looks like I told him "A 5x5 with 2 flyers" he says "On his g2s? Are they like 2"?". He was pretty pumped and kept going on and on about it and thanking me.

He told me he shot it in Dec with his crossbow, in a stand 300 yards away. I asked him if he was getting a salvage tag for it and he said "There's no meat, I just want the rack" I didn't say much more hung up and put it where he asked me to and walked away. My Dad told me I should have just called the CO got a salavge tag and kept it for myself. But then again if someone found a Buck I shot I'd like to get a call about it.

Even though he's not getting a salvage tag you did the right thing IMO. What's the big deal about a deadhead you did not shoot anyway? Plus he let you on his land so that is helpful you made his day.
Though, I guess you could have used those antlers on you 'doe' from your rifle hunt. Sorry, just razzin you.

you did the right thing by contacting the land owner and then the hunter. However, he needs a salvage tag to keep the rack. Or, if he didn't fill his bow tag I would think that would suffice... but not 100% on that.

Absolutely the right thing to do. Especially if he gives you access to hunt. That will go a long way to building that relationship more and a long future of access to that place for hunting. Nice work!!!

It's better off to let the land owner have it. Sounds like it was probably his deer anyhow. It will mean alot more to him having it than it would ever mean to you.

You did the right thing. The tag and such is his choice to do the right thing.

You did the right thing.I can promise you that deer will mean way more to him than you.I dont really see why your dad would tell you that you should have kept it, but thats just me.
I also dont think he could put his unused bow tag on it.It would have had to have been called in before now.

I shot a deer two seasons ago and didn't find it. (the only one I have ever lost). A buddy found it durning the first shotgun season. Less then 100 yards from where I stopped looking. I told him what it looked like before he showed me. He still wouldn't give it to me. Now I would say we aren't friends anymore

You did the right thing. I'm sure the guy who shot it was thrilled. You'll gain a good reputation doing stuff like that for others and karma will be on your side.

Our little Teenager is growing up so fast, we're so proud :D

You did the right thing Josh :way: Reverse the rolls and ask yourself if you would've wanted to get that call on a buck that you lost? Good call!

Good work with that...Even if that landowner only lets you shed hunt, he now knows a little bit about your character which will benefit you even more down the road. If you would have kept it and he found out later that you never said anything, could be the end of the road for shed hunting that property...never know. Good work Biebs
