Decoy Placement

Super Moderator
Seems like at "darkothirty" in the morning...I just run out 20 yards and fumble around sticking a couple decoys up.

Now with the Pretty Boy setup and Buckwing bobble heads on the way...I'm curious if (especially for archery) if any of you have a specific pattern or placement of your decoys?

Do you want Pretty Boy facing you, sideways, away??

I did a search of the "Master's" setups...since Limb does put a lot of "research" into it...

I put the jake decoy, or the pretty boy, about 10-15 yards away, facing right at the blind. The rest of them I like to put in a staggerd line near, and around, the blind as well. Generally I'll have all my decoys within 15-20 yards of my set up.

I like to keep my pretty boy about 15-20 yards in front of me, facing me for bowhunting. For gun hunting I usually put it out to about 25-30 yards.

I put the pretty boy 10 to 15 yards from the blind facing the blind with one hen 3 ft in front of him. This year i'm going to do the same thing but add 2 bobbin head hens.

Thanks guys! Sounds like facing the blind is the way to go.

I've got one of these older Bubba 1/2 strut decoys...should I incorporate it into my setup (along with the pretty boy) or leave it out altogether?

I've killed a lot of toms over the years with "bubba" and one hen decoy but now I'm not sure with the Pretty Boy also....

Paul,
We set up our decoys about 5 to 7 yards from the blind. The pretty boy bumping a hen decoy set on the ground. The bobbin heads scattered about in a feeding pattern.

Shoot Paul up here he just jump out the window and catch them before they fly.
Due to their size it takes a couple of minutes for them to get airborne.

a cattle prodder should put him down long enought to flip up the blind and step on his head till he quits floppin.....
just a thought

I aree 5-10 yards with the jake or pretty boy facing the blind. The toms will want to make eye contact with the decoy and what due you know they come right between the blind and the decoys. And for some reason the birds hang up 10 to 15 yards from the decoys like they always seem to due they are still within stick flickin range. I learned this set up while hunting wiht Tom Carrol from Double Bull and it has worked time and time again my friend. When it comes time to hitting them you are on your own.
