deer calling

since this year is my first year deer hunting how hard is it to work a call?? is there any thing special you have to do??do you have to make any special sound?? do you have to hold it a certain way??

when you guys sight in your shot guns whats the best thing to rest your gun on?? would something like a sleeping bag work??also where do you start out at??do you start at 25 yards till you get three good groups then go to 50 and so on

I use a gun rest, but I used to use sand bags. I don't think a sleeping bag would work too well. If the scope was just mounted, definitely shoot 25 yards to make sure you're on the paper. Then move to whatever yardage you want zeroed at and shoot away.

And then get an ice pack ready.

Sand bags work great. If you dont have sand bags a pile of clothes work well. I like my rifle case folded over then a coat on top of that.

Dont know about Iowa hunting but up here in "Da North Woods" most people sight in at a 100yards. Most the time your shots are under that.
And calls. Buy a can call and grunt tube. Can call is simple tip it over and the can produces the sound, the grunt tube you should be able to just blow into and the sound should come out. 1 second to 2 seconds should be all the longer your grunts should be. You can also blow your grunt tube to imitate a buck tending a doe, you want a bout sets 3 notes in rapid succession. About 3/4 of a second between. You may want to use your can call 1 or 2 times then a min. later do the tending grunts.
Practice with calls is the trick to figuring out what works and what doesnt.
