We'll I had never seen them before when field dressing. I shot a big doe tonight and it was so cold out, I waited until I got home to field dress it in the warmth of my garage. I found 2 fetus.

There was a member here a few years ago that took one and somehow did something to it that allowed the skeleton to be seen. He then preserved it in some sort of clear resin. Maybe somebody will remember who it was and chime in.

I would like one to see if I could put it in the beetle tank. That would be a unique thing to have, alhough I am not sure the bone structure is hard enough to make it past the beetles that early on. If they are still on hand, I would be interested in having one sent my way.

I think JNRBRONC did what your'e talking about Shovel.

And to trump the 3 deer thing, JNR also shot 4 in one shot last year when the big doe had triplets in her.

Randy is all about the attention, i tell you!

Cool pics, no worries for posting them here. They're dead deer, just a little immature! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Shovel,

Muddy is right that JNRBRONC has done some of this preserving of the fetus skeletons. he actually removes all the tissue and just leaves the skeleton behind intact (I believe he has a speciall solvent that eats soft tissue and leaves the bone). I have one sititng on my desk, pretty cool and always makes for a good conversation piece. I think some of the people I work with think I am crazy after I tell them what it is but I think it is pretty cool.

Maybe the DNR could expand the harvest reporting system to include some (optional) information like this.

Like press 3 to enter addtional information. If doe, how many babies, if buck how many points.

I never got to disect pigs in Highschool so I guess now I am making up for it /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

And shed antler buck.

I know they have the button, and shed antler buck categories, but wouldnt it be nice to see how many bucks in Iowa were being harvested that were say 10 pointers?

Its a woman's body, so its her choice. I am an Athiest, so I don't beleive abortion is destroying a soul.

Given that they eat fetal ducks in eggs (boiled up) called BALUT...I'd try selling them down in the local Asian market...You could probably get a pretty penny for them. I'm sure they're some kind of a delicacy.

I'd rather see an age structure reported because a 1.5 year old deer can be a 10 pointer just as easily as a 8.5 year old deer. But that's off the point. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

that is SO cool. i have got to start looking for those.

someone wake randy up and have him tell how he preverved them

Not too sure I'd post those in the public section though. </div></div>
Funny isn't it...the same crowd that would whine about these pictures will fight like hell for abortion. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Congrats on the harvest!

I used a protocol similar to this one. You can skip the fixation step (step I) and jump right into digestion. I added an Alcian Blue step to stain cartilage. Also, instead of using glycerin in IV Clearing, I dehydrated the fetus with acetone and embeded in polyester resin I bought at the Hobby Lobby. As you dehydrate with acetone, what little tissue is left by the KOH digestion collapses and hides the bones, but when the polyester resin is added, it "fluffs" back up and appears clear. It is a heck of a lot of work with a lot of nasty reagents and the resin alone runs $23/bottle.

On Monday, I talked to a friend at work and he said they killed twelve deer with three shots last weekend. I'm sure I had a puzzled look on my face until it dawned on me that they shot 3 does, each carrying triplets. Here is the doe I shot January '08. Herd management at it's finest.
