Shot one this year that had 2 in it as well...first time for me too.
 
The doe I got last night had triplets inside her. 2 does and 1 buck. Buck is in the middle.

There is a measuring device that you can use to determine the date of conception and the date of parturition. It is called the Fetus Scale and can be purchased from QDMA. If enough does are shot in any certain spot it is helpful in determining the rut.
 
The doe I shot this morning had only 1 fetus, a little buck. Hmmmm, I wonder what his future potential would have been.... LOL

Greg, it looks to me that you filled your buck quota for 2012 and 2013 with a pair of 140s a 135, and a possible 160, along with potentially a couple of very nice bucks for 2014. Don't get me wrong, just because of a little sarcasm, you have done nothing wrong, illegal, or unethical, but this should be much more of an issue for this season than the possibility of shooting shed bucks. I am still harping on the over harvesting of does and your pictures actually point out what is being sacrificed, four bucks and 2 does along with the original 3 does, meaning 9 fewer deer in your hunting area next year. Again, you did nothing wrong and I realize that virtually every doe killed this time of year will be carrying babies. Perhaps this was needed at one time, but I think that if we want deer to hunt in any numbers in the future, we need to determine when enough is enough. Good job hunting and improving your skills, because if I remember correctly a year ago you could not get a break on killing a doe.
 
This late in the season and I am basically getting a deer within hours of going out, that either has to be attributed to and improved learning curve on my part, or an over abundance of deer in the area or both.

I recently found out that in addition to the Late Season Antlerless tags, they had urban tags available in my area as well. There is obviously a lot of deer in this area, as I saw a herd of 20+ of them come through Sunday when I shot my doe.

I do want the population to stay high, how to do that and still harvest is the question. Yearling does are tender, and only carry one baby, so shooting them will reduce the population the least, however you risk shooting a button buck. Shooting a second year doe would reduce the chance of shooting a button buck, but then she might be carrying twins and most likely one of those babys would be a buck.

I think shooting younger deer would be better at keeping the overall deer population growing and the number of bucks high.

I am curious to know if does produce more bucks in certain areas versus others, or if some family lines produce more bucks.

I am going to keep record of how many fetus and what sex they are from now on. If more of you were to do this, maybe there could be an argument made to the DNR that shooting so many does reduces the buck population at a higher rate than the doe population.
 
Well believe it or not, a couple friends and I were in southern Iowa Hi-Powering does last weekend and we field dressed one and it had 8 fetus's it her. I've never heard of the # being that high but I'm assuming all but 2 or 3 would die off. Has anyone else heard of that happening?
 
am i the only one who finds this disturbing!??Im all for thinning the heard, but lets allow more deer to be harvested earlier, lets say during shotgun season, you can take two deer with the exception of the second needs to be a doe.allow bow hunters two Deer per season, pay for two tags,but the second deer needs to be a doe, early muzzle loader, two tags , with the exception, the second needs to be a doe, but late muzzy, you can only shoot bucks.when im out late muzzy season, im out for bucks, hopefully, ive filled my freezer way before then, if not , let it rest as i was to choosy on what i wanted to take ,but if i shot a doe this late in the yr, and feild dressed it and found 3 fetuses in her, that would proably make me sick! If i feild dressed a doe and found fetuses in her,the first thing that would come to mind was-- who bred her, the 170-180 class buck that ive been hunting the past yr that passed on his genetics? The thing about it is , the 180 class deer may die of old age, and never see another yr, because we never harvested him, and what he passed on, ... well.. its gone also.I love to hunt deer, but , no does that late in the yr.

just think of all the future deer you took out of the herd. that is the only good thing about the late doe seasons. herd reduction at its finest
 
just think of the future deer we took out of the heard?Taking out a possible 160 out of the heard is reduction? good luck on your heard management.shoot your does early in the yr to fill your frezzer, not later when they have already been bred.my opinion only, respectfully.
 
Bred or not bred doesn't make a difference. One thing to consider about shooting a doe late season, is they are bigger, so you can get more meat by shooting less deer. If you shot yearling does in Sep/Oct you might get 25lbs of meat. Shoot that same doe in mid January, your likely to get 32lbs+ of meat.
 
You want more meat, shoot an older doe with fawns early in the year. They don't pack on much more meat from October to January, they do however pack on fat reserves to help get them through the tough winters but not much meat that can be eaten. The other reason they are bigger in January is because they are usually carrying multiple fawns that their bodies have to nourish and it isn't edible meat that they are adding in order to do this.
