If we had to call or check in our harvests - then the DNR could have the hard results that they're estimating for. How can you estimate from 2005 tag sales & last years harvest?
Also looks as if the 3 day season in Nov. is here to stay?

Lot of assumptions...that people actually used tags (I know I have a pocket full of unused tags...)
The TG season has never been used before so I don't see how any statistics
can be derived from it yet.
Somehow it all seems like a moot point...it doesn't really matter how many deer were harvested...but how many are left. That's the part yet to be determined by surveys I guess.
Many areas have little cover and it will be easy to see that it's time to back off. In my area I will be very curious since it is a very high deer density area.
If the seasons didn't work this year...wonder why they will be expected to work next year??
The reports/data used to write this article are available from Mr. Suchy. I took him up on his offer in the Harvest Report thread and requested the files. Here is the last part of his post from that thread: If you would like the complete report please email me at: willie.suchy@dnr.state.ia.us
It appears to me that the numbers were based on historcial hunter success rates. More licenses were sold so multiply that by the historical success rate and you have a projection. They will try to solidify these numbers by aerial surveys and the snow forecasted for tonight should assist in that. Then, they will also do spotlight surveys.
There is also discussion of seasons/antlerless license availability in his report.
I strongly suggest you request this information from Willie.
Cutting or eliminating the county quotas in some northern areas won't help us any. Our county quota is only 100. The only way to increase our numbers is to go back to some sort of "antlered only" license during the gun seasons. This will save MANY more does than eliminating the 100 antlerless tags.
