Deer Hunting "Hermits"

So this guy by me had his house and all his mounts and sheds stolen, OUCH!!!! I mean a huge collection. Now he doesn't "ever want to talk to anyone again or talk to any hunter in the area". I can see part of his point.

Aside from that, everywhere I go there's territorial disputes, jealousy, problems, poaching, etc. Sometimes I am tempted to keep to myself more and more. I do love talking to "certain" select people though.

What do you all do and how do you all handle dealing with neighbors, keeping to yourself, etc? Just wondering your opinions and thoughts.

Re: Deer Hunting "Hermits"

Everyone that hunts; loves to talk about hunting.

I dont give two ounces of care about someones hunting stories. Matterfact the older I get the less I care. Unless its a good friend or someone that farely quick and to the point. I was sitting on the field, the buck stepped out, I grunted he came in turned I wacked him. DONE! I dont wanna hear about what he had for breakfast the morning, or the 10 does that walked out first. Quick and to the point.

This site has alot of addicted people, people that think about hunting 27hours a day. People like this are addicted to hunting, like a crackhead to drugs. Very few people are "addicted." And when you can find a support group of like minded people (IW Guys) its a great thing.

I dont talk hunting to people anymore, becuase people wanna tell stories. Stories don't teach me anything, and most the time there lies. If you wanna talk to me about hunting, I wanna talk QDM, hunt stragies, moon phase theories, weather patterns, ect... Average hunters dont know enough about it to hold a decent conversation about it or if they do they dont want to spill any extra knowledge so they dont really talk about hunting.

Just my .02 worth.

Dean
{Edited to add: There is one thing that I may have not mentioned, I love reading the details in the harvest forums here.}

I keep quiet with locals, neighbors etc. I've also been known to fib to them, "not much around this year"!. People like many members of this site, I could talk all day long about whitetails with.

I am kind of the opposite.....give me the "how it went down" story. Ive read so many how to's from so many experts I am surprised my brai still can hold my wife's birthday in it's storage room.

I know of several people and families down around the area I grew up in SE Iowa that are complete "deer hermits". Most of them live on family farms and work hard for their living, they have either had bad experiences with sharing their stories/pics or they just don't personally feel the need to do so. They share stories etc...with a few select people and I was lucky enough to get to hunt a few shotgun drives with one of the families that I speak of. I actually shot my first deer ever on their land. They were happy for me and it gave me the enjoyable experience that started my hunting pursuit.

I enjoy seeing people's pics and occasionally sharing my own success or experiences, but I do have a lot of respect for the people that just keep it to themselves because they don't see any need to share it with the masses.

I can't even imagine how I would feel if all of my mounts and everything were stolen.
I can pretty much talk about anything that has anything to do with hunting. Most stories I can handle, but, there is one guy I know that has said before that a 14 pt, 12 pt, and 16 pt all came out in front of him and he passed them all up cuz there was a bigger one in there..... Give me a break!
I am known for telling probably too many details though.. ppl give me shit a lot cuz i will drag the story on for a while.
One thing though.. As a taxidermist, and any full time taxidermist can vouch for it, but probably wont because of business purposes.. but, when everyone brings their deer in, they all want to tell you every bit of every story... and time is money. Taxidermists dont want to hear all the stories or they will never get anything done.. I've never been really that busy with mounts though, I usually just do them for people I know.. So I like to hear my friends' stories.

successful hunters are always looking for ways to improve their chances and eliminating the things that negatively impact. Competition negatively impacts trophy whitetail success.

Here is how I see the math. Human nature coagulates around success, Coagulation stops the blood flow, Trophy hunter needs hemmhorage, therefore hermit is produced.

If dead down wind marketed "shut your pie hole" spray I would be a customer. Always a challenge containing the excitement.

Excellent post....As a salesman for a John Deere dealership, I used to have quite a few hunting pictures behind my desk, just incase a farmer wanted all their deer killed, I could help them out.
I finally took everything down the other day after hearing the 10000th story of the big one someone saw from guys that know nothing about hunting or our addiction.
I'll talk deer all day long to someone interested in the truth and not a bunch of garbage.

I can't stand the exaggerated stories either. I talked to a neighbor to one of my spots that claimed he passed a buck with a 6x6 typical frame and double drops...Because he was holding out for a big non-typical in the area. He ended up shooting a 7 pointer the second to last day of the season. DDDRRRRR.... There are only a handful of people I tell about big deer. When I harvest a buck I never disclose the actual location he was taken in because I don't like to draw attention to my spots. I always claim it was taken on my families land because no one is going to get that out from under me....

There are VERY few people I talk with about what I've been seeing or what I know about. I could count them on one hand. Mums the word with me.

I don't mind listening to the hunting stories. Storytelling is a big part of the hunting tradition. So what if the story is bulls**t? Who am I to look down on someone because they're tickled to shoot a deer that I would have passed for a couple more years? If they want to tell an epic tale about it, and thank God and their Kindergarten teacher who got them into hunting for it so be it.

Most people probably know those few hunters that have some GIANTS in their basement that hardly tell anyone, pretty cool.

I only told about 3 people around me about my website. No one otherwise would ever know that I've shot more than a doe /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Told a few hard-core people AND told a couple after one dude was like "Oh, I was bored at work today so I googled your name and found your website- pretty cool!". "You googled my name?!? Huh, ok" I said. No biggy BUT yeah, I usually keep things pretty quiet PLUS I'm so busy hunting and working it's hard to be Mr. Social. I did feel SO BAD for that guy that had every last memory taken from him.

Re: Deer Hunting "Hermits"

I only talk about what I'm seeing or show my big buck trailcam pics to the people I trust.

If I ever shoot a booner someday I'm going to say it was shot on public land. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
