deer mount care

How do those of you who have deer mounts take care of them? I noticed guys brushing theirs down at the classic and have been wondering.

Well I do brush mine down from time to time and I also will take one of those cans of air and hold it a distance away and spray him down to get the dust off. Not really sure if you could do much more.

My taxidermist recommended brushing with a brass brush (grill brush) as often as you would like. Don't use a steel brush as this will rip the hair and skin.

Also, he sprays all of his mounts twice a year with Raid Flying Insect and really treats the back portion with it. Not a heavy spraying, but a fog.

I spray silicone all over the whole mount, and really get it good around the ears eyes noses, and mouth every six mounths due to wood burning stove/dry weather to prevent cracking...

I do exactly what the article says and it works great!

Guys, Guys, Guys...If you have to spray a mount with Raid, you'd better get another taxidermist. A tanned cape that has been professionally mounted needs little care other than a lightly damp cloth ran with the hair once a month. Blowing the mount with air will work, but is sometimes hard to get it groomed well again. Once the cape is dried, you really can't re-groom the head with brushes anyway. Use the damp cloth, keep the crud off of the mount and you will enjoy it for years.

I tell a lot of people, to buy one of those dusters, that looks like a raccoon tail on a stick. Have it close to your mount(s), so when you are admiring it, you also dust it off. Once dust begins,it adds up in a hurry, cobwebs between tines, all of this makes the whole mount look faded and old. If you desire, you can put a little Windex on a Q-tip and clean the eyes.
Like what others have said, you should never have to spray, wipe or comb your mount.

You guys are going about this all wrong. What you really need to do is send all of your mounts to me. I will personally take care of them on MY wall for you. All of your troubles caring for them will all be over. If you would like, I could even send you an occasional picture as a reminder of the great care they are receiving!

There was an excellent article in one of last years Traditional Bowhunter issues. Can't remember which one, I just remember sitting outside reading it. If you check your vacuum cleaners most have the soft bristle brush for the end of the hose attachment. This works great, and should not be harmful as long as you remember to go with the grain of the hair on the hide. This also works great for getting the dust off the hides and antlers, and around the eyes and mouths.

in addition to dusting off my mounts, my taxidermist also suggested wiping down the antlers with a rag that has some "old english" on it, she said it will keep the antlers from drying out and cracking. she suggested doing this about every 2-3 months.

Liquid gold will really shine up your antlers and darken the bases and give them luster.

Muddy, just keep it simple. I would have to agree with iowabruce with wiping down your mount with damp cloth. Anything else, who knows what could happen!
