Deer Ponds

Looking at adding a waterhole in my alfalfa plot but torn between a deer pond or a man made water hole. Seen differing options on both from users here so just trying to get some useful info from those who have used them. I understand EHD stays in the mud of these ponds which is steering me toward a deer pond but with all these ponds people are digging up, must be working for some. Any info is appreciated.

Both have +/- & I do have both.
If u dig them deep & steep & it’s all clay u get into with very little top soil … I personally feel fine doing that. I dig em & they take me maybe 1-2 hours to do. I don’t feel like u r gonna have some big addition of midges. There’s going to be some midges around no matter what but the worst will be those stagnant water shallow ponds that are filled with nothing but muck & no oxygen.
Now- if u do a container…. I try to accomplish the same end result where they fill themselves with rainfall. I personally don’t like filling them but if a guy doesn’t mind doing it…. No big deal. So…. If u are the guy that doesn’t mind filling the spots- I’d go with container. Or set container up with grade or tile tube to fill itself.

Would be nice to double as irrigation source for adjacent food plot if big enough…might have to think about that…
