Deer Study Advisory Committee

Apparently we have a Deer Study Advisory Committee that are holding meetings re: the future of deer hunting in Iowa.

They are holding these meetings at the on the following place and dates:

I was wondering if any of you IW members and IBA members are aware of these meetings and the agenda?

What is the Deer Study Advisory Committee about? Is there any information out there, does anyone have the time to post a link so we can all be informed? I sure would like to know more, would you?

Opportunity:
Input for Governor-appointed Deer Study Advisory Committee

What:
The Governor has appointed a committee to study the impact of deer hunting in Iowa. One issue the committee is interested in how the out-of-state hunters impact tourism in the state. Are any lodging properties, communities or organizations catering to hunters in any way? If not already, is there interest to do so? (DNR says about 10,000 out-of-state deer hunters visit Iowa each year.) Would it be useful for local tourism members to receive the names and addresses of out-of-state hunters so they could contact them with tourism opportunities?

Please provide any statistics, stories or comments on how out-of-state deer hunting has affected your destination or community. All responses will be forwarded to the committee for their review.

Deadline: Tuesday, October 7, 2008.

Iowa's New Greatest Freakin CASH CROP---Deer............Surely wont be any reason to live in CULVERS State--anymore..And it will certainly take away from the mystique we have had. I would think that it would be hard to promote tourism through deer hunting and have a drastically declining deer herd. When they send out the community information are they going to point out the lack of hunting access even if you do draw a tag? Will they explain how Iowa has if not the smallest, at least one of the smallest, amount of public hunting acres in the US? Are they going to point out license sales of 350,000 and a total harvest of 140,000 deer for a NON-success ratio of over 60%? I am sure that they will explain that NR archers bought 5150 licenses, including both antlered and anterless tags, but only harvested 1434 total deer in 2006 for a NON-success rate of 72%. How many tourism dollars will the State get if we continue to slaughter our herd down to the goal level of 170,000 total deer in the state and then fall back to what was the case in the 70's and 80's, no NR licenses at all. What in the world do the restaurant owners association or bed and breakfast owners know about deer management or deer hunting? I know it is a balancing act for them, but I think it is time for the IDNR to step up and take a stand for the people who support them year in and year out, the RESIDENT HUNTERS. As far as I know the IDNR gets no monetary support from the Farm Bureau, or the restaurant owners, or any of the other groups on this poorly though out commission.
