Congrats on a great hunt boys.
I finally got a few pics of Jordan’s turkey from two Sundays ago. He put the hammer to this bird at 7:25 pm after a 40 minute emotional rollercoaster ride.
The tom showed up high on a knoll about 150 yards away and gobbled immediately upon seeing the decoys. Another tom and several hens showed up with him and he did everything but come running right in. After about 25 minutes he showed up above us on a terrace 45 yards away. We thought for sure he would come down the terrace to us but he just stood there showing off in the sun, hoping to pull one of the decoys to him. The tom he was with gobbled on the other side of the terrace out of sight from us and “our” tom gobbled back, disappeared over the terrace, and took our hopes with him. I jumped back on the call with some clucks and purrs and 5 minutes later one of the toms appeared at the south end of the terrace 60 yards away. Jordan saw him first and whispered an excited “there he is”. The tom was in no hurry and I slowly got Jordan repositioned. We got the gun up and were settled in with the tom at 45 yards. We had rehearsed this moment several times and Jordan was ready for the moment of truth. When the bird reached 35 yards I talked him through having the beads lined up and squeezing the trigger when he was ready. When the bird was at 30 yards I could hear Jordan’s breathing. It sounded like it had just finished running a 4 minute mile and I had to chuckle. The fever had hit him and hit him hard. When the tom hit 25 yards Jordan put him down like a pro and the celebration began.
What a perfect hunt for his first bird!!!!
What a proud moment for a Dad and a memory for a life time.
Thanks to the land owner for this opportunity!
