DNR Investigates Sheen on Maple River
AURELIA - A dark sheen on top of approximately three miles of the Maple River southwest of Aurelia was investigated Monday by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The sheen was reported to the DNR at approximately 10 a.m. Most of the sheen along with some foam was observed along a three-mile stretch of river although the DNR found traces of the substance upstream for another approximately 17 miles.
The DNR was unable to determine on Monday where the sheen originated from or what was causing the water discoloration, but no dead fish were found and live fish were observed in the water. There was no odor associated with the water.
Initial water samples indicated no high ammonia levels or lowered dissolved oxygen levels which would threaten aquatic life. Additional water samples will be sent to a laboratory to try and determine what the substance is that is causing the discoloration.
