DNR Poaching Deer

Got back to the house from my stand on Sunday morning to eat breakfast. My father-in-law and cousin were out driving around. They came back, telling us about a HUGE 10 pointer stuck in a fence. We called the sheriff's office, and headed out there with the cameras. Sure enough, a big buck was standing right next to the fence, about 40 yards from us. I took one look through the binos and I knew it was fake. It would move it's head from side to side, twitch an ear, but that was it. We were making some noise, and nothing. The head would follow the cars as they drove by. We waited for 30 minutes for the sheriff to arrive, he never did. We wanted to go out and look at this thing. It was cool.
We headed back to the house. I called one DNR agent, he answered, I told him the deal..... and said "I think it's a fake deer, but if it's real, it's hurt bad". The phone went silent. 20 seconds later, the line was cut. I tried another DNR agent, no answer. It wasn't 10 seconds later, we got a call from the sheriff. It was on HIS land. He said he was walking up to it, and it broke it's antler, and jumped the fence. Yeah....
We went back over there, sure enough, the deer was gone, this time there were tire tracks next to the fence row it was on. The gate was open, and the barn just up the road, on the sheriff's land, was closed up. It was pretty neat to see, and I'm glad they are doing that to catch the people that would poach a deer.

The deer's right antlers are slanted down quite a bit. When they were over there the first time, it's head was tilted down towards the fence. It probably looked like it was caught in the fence.

Anyway, it was quite the adventure, and I wanted to share it with everyone. Sorry about the long post....

That's why I didn't state which county I was hunting in.

I think its a good thing they are using them. It sure looks real in the picture though. But, us hunters can tell when a deer is real or not though, even if it is the slightest clue.

I agree. They (DNR) do a good job IMO. Especially when you concider how thin they are.

Once while picking up some trees in the spring from the DNR, they the trees in the garge behind the offices, to keep the trees out of the sun. They had a bunch of junk in the back corner- a snowmobile, a boat, some other equipment. Tucked among that was a deer with the head removed, a bunch of electronics and wires sticking out of the neck...their remote control deer decoy! Of course, this was no surprise, anyone that reads deer magazines and outdoor columns knows that they do this.

Poachers will still be out there. Stupid poachers don't read deer mags- they just look at the "pi-churz". And smart poachers that can read think they are too smart to ever fall for such a gimmick and will eventually get caught anyway.

Turn in Poachers!

I have the Tag, it was season, and we can hunt his land. I wonder, if I shot it, could I tag it and claim it? I would have one heck of a decoy for next year!!!

That would almost be tempting, you can hunt there, you have a tag, it was during shooting hours. So if you were to cross the fence, walk up to it and shoot it, how would it be illegal? Then if the landowner knew nothing about the DNR placing this decoy on his/her land, you could charge the DNR for trespassing on their land lol This story reminds me of a time when my buddies where our road hunting, they came across this ditch that had a rooster pheasant and a covey of quail sitting there. My one buddy gets ready to perform the stalk, but realizes these birds were fake, so he just walked up to them and checked them out. They looked up the road and saw an old abandoned road with a Dnr truck parked around the side. My buddies dad drove right up to the barn and asked them what the deal was and they had placed the birds within 10 yards of the max shooting distance from a building which would of made it illegal. Boy my buddies dad really layed into them on that one and who would be able to tell a 10 yard distance between 200 yards lol. I will never forget that story.
