Do you see more basic 8 or 10 pt frames.

I guess that I see a pattern in that one place I hunt there are big bodied wide 8pointers with fairly short tines.Another place that I hunt the bucks are medium sized 10 and 12 pointers with tight high racks. One spot in particular a couple of mature pretty good sized 6 pointers have been harvested in the past couple of years.I would like to draw some conclusions about the survivability of a wide racked buck in heavy cover vs.a tight racked buck in the same cover. The rationale is that a tight racked buck has an easier time getting through the thick stuff than the wide buck and would have a better chance of escaping the shotgunners. To blow this out of the water the wide 8s are in an area so overgrown that you need 4 legs and a pointy nose to get through it.Maybe they know that they cant run away so they just lay there and let you walk past unless you step on them. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter of rack configuration vs.the type of cover they are found in.

it just depends if you have alot of nutricion, you'll get more points, but it does depend on where you are hunting at

Ironwood,
How long have you been seeing that pattern, 8's on one farm and 10's on the other?

Don't know why dad hasn't chimed in yet. All I can say is that's been the tendency for years. My dad's taken anice eight on that farm, and we have a monster four point shed from there, too. We shot two ten pointers on the other farm this year(three if you include one that wasn't found) and found a great matched set. I'll make sure dad gets on soon and is more specific.

Old Buck,
Sorry about the slow reply. Been trying to make a living. We've been hunting both farms for the past eight to nine years. It took us a while to come to this conclusion. Early on I was sold on the farm with the lesser racks. I believed it was more huntable. That alone may be why there are more large racks on the Middle River property. It is more difficult to hunt and we didn't take the time early on to learn the movement patterns on this property. As soon as I typed this out my son said it is hard to believe that I could call the first farm the farm with lesser racks. There are great deer in both locations, but one farm clear holds more deer with tall wide ten point genetics.
