Dogs Dogs Dogs

Looking for some advice on what to do about dogs running my farm 3-4 days a week. I had no problem the last two years with the occasional dogs passing thru, but this year it has gotten out of control with photos of 4-5 dogs actually chasing deer or dogs laying around my feeder.

I have located which house the dogs are coming from, it is neighbor about 1.5 miles away with about 15 dogs that just roam around the neighborhood.

I have contacted local DNR and police and in my county there is no ordinance where anything can be done from either of them.

I am looking for any ideas on what I could do without killing them.
Thank You.

Visit the neighbor and discuss your situation. I’m sure you’ll hear that “dogs is dogs”. Mention you hope not to catch their dogs in your coyote sets. Actually run traps, 1.5 double coil jumps which should hold them but not do as much damage as number 2’s. The few dogs I caught by mistake were easy to release, then take them to the pound. Much more difficult than SSS.

Bowmar had a great way to get rid of dogs on a video..After talking to neighbor and still having issues trap them..Then haul them 2-3 hours away to a shelter and tell the owners where they can pick them up..Next time drive to another state and drop them of at a shelter..seems like a good idea

I had an issue years ago when a couple dogs attacked and killed our geese. I caught them in the act and raised hell with the neighbor up the road. That didn't work, so I talked to a state trooper, and he said SSS, shoot shovel and silence! Next time I caught them in the act I shot one and they both ran off. It cost them a big vet bill, but they never came back! Dog enforcement agency is worthless!

Unfortunately, someone who lets that many dogs run wild is not very likely to care about "your deer". Then, if you are a good dude and try to resolve it face to face and nothing changes, which is likely IMO, then when they do start to disappear the poor excuse of a pet owner has a real good idea what is going on. Then...who knows how they respond.

In my experience over the years, SSS is ultimately where you will end up, unless you are OK with continual dog visits, that is.

If you can get the dogs bring them to a pound. If dont want to sss ( i wouldnt either) then try popping them in the hind end with a bb/pellet gun.

I’m not a sss guy either, but several years back we had the same issue with 4 or 5 running in a pack. Of the 5 one was a Rottweiler and one a pit bull. One day I encountered them walking out and got to a place where the pit didn’t want to back down… what would you do? There’s no way I’m running down 5 dogs with treats to scoop them up and drive them to the pound. Stinky, mangy, flea invested dogs can ride in the cab with me. Lol. That’s not happening.

It’s one of the worst scenarios for a landowner. I can’t kill a dog either, this is a tough scenario!

I don't want to kill a dog either. I will, but I don't want to.
Chasing deer is 1 thing, but I won't be threatened on my own property by one, that's where I draw the line, there's no second chances in that scenario.
Not sure I'd use a bb or pellet gun on 1 either. Tough deal. I like the pound idea hours away. A lot more work because of an irresponsible dog owner. I probably wouldn't have a conversation with the owner, just makes you the target if something happens to the dogs, whether you did it, or another fed up landowner did....and if I did take them to the pound, I'd let the pound call them, not me, again, lots of folks will take out their anger towards you if they know you inconvenienced them....

Contact the sheriff and ask him to make it a priority. Our local sheriff did just this a few years ago, and now we have an ordinance in place due to his pulling for it. I believe it’s warning, $750 first offense, $1,000 second offense. To most of these “useless” dog owners that just let the roam, those fines don’t mean much. When you or your backyard chickens are threatened / tormented on your own property, only one option. Multiple solutions with that one option. I recommend run coyote snares, if legal, and plenty of foothold traps.
