Dogs on your property:

I know this subject has come up before, but it is hard to believe IA has no law about loose running dogs. At least my county. In Mi, where I come from, running dogs are dealt with severely. My neighbor has let his dogs run all over since I purchased the land. My land sat idle for some time and I know he has lived next door from way back. Last season the issue came to a head when twice at prime time two of his canines ran right down the deer trail in front of me. This summer I have seen his dogs running across my new clover in the morning, and last weekend his beagle was chasing a rabbit across the road. A doe was feeding in my clover,,looked up, at the sound and ran. Eventually the hound was trailing on my property. I called the county and they told me"No there is no law regarding letting dogs run all over. This neighbor deer hunts too. I have heard his opinion on the subject, to the effect that the deer are used to his dogs around. Really burns me!!

Really sucks. Had coyote dogs that are let run loose yr round chase every deer off. Also lost cattle to them in a feed lot. Thats when the owner says they are not his

Well, I know what I would do regarding this matter, but other members here will burn you at the stake for voicing your beliefs so PM me if you want my advice on what to do with trespassing dogs or cats.

me and my buddies had this conversation last night. touchy area. I guess when it came down to it, if a dog continually ruined my hunts i would probably try my hardest to talk the land owner, then i would (as polite as possible, in a non threatening way) tell him what will happen if it continues.

just remember the attaachment that people have with dogs and whatever you choose to do, mouth shut.

would hate to see it come to that, but if the landowner understands the price that will paid, and still allows them on there.............

I may be wrong, which would be nothing new, but didn't the legislature pass some new laws reguarding letting dogs run loose? As I recall they made it so the land owner has less options. In other words I think they made it illegal to shoot dogs on your ground. May have had something to do if they have tags or not too. Like I said, I'm not sure about this, I heard it on the radio and by the time I realized what they were talking about and that I should pay attention the story was over.

The 'Bonker

I set 10-20 bucket/box sets with 220 conibears (with fish heads for bait) opening day of trapping season along coon trails and creeks. This helps decrease coons, oppossum, and skunks. Plus I make a little gas money while decreasing preditors on my property that hurt pheasant, quail and turkey nesting. Trapping should always be part of anyones overall management plan for their property. I usually trap for 2-3 weeks depending on the number of successful sets or until I catch the desired animal. Conibear sets kill the animal instantly so I can check my traps after getting out of the stand in the morning (no rush as the animal is dead) and you don't have to worry about bucket/box sets freezing in as they are not set in or under water. If any stray dogs are roaming your property day or night they will find the fish, same as all the other species listed with the same end result. Be sure to buy all the required licenses for trapping/fur harvesting. If I happen to catch any stray dogs I always make sure to give them a proper burial.

Wow, that has never stopped you before, but with comment like that we know what you would do.

If I was out in the middle of know where and had a dog run in front of me while hunting i would do the same as you HCH........................ I would get down and take the dog home with me

When a dog would harass our livestock, I took care of it. Wild dogs are dealt with instantly, no decision to be made. But as for a pet dog just running your land I think I would just scare the crap out him several times. Bird Bombs work well, bottle rockets, pellet gun, etc.

we've got the same problem down at our place. we see them all summer and then even in the deerstand. we also have trail camera pics of them.... several at that! and no matter how much you want to believe that deer are "used to" dogs being there they will never be. if you ever find a deer that we hunt and have a barking dog run by it and it doesnt run away... tell me cause i wanna see that. no matter how much they are there they will always be spooked. and its unfortunate that we have to deal with issues like this. but i would say LEGALLY the best way to handle it is with the sheriff and such. otherwise you could always resort to

I agree.

If I know its the neighbors farm dog just wondering and not causing problems that's one thing. But when his coon hounds come by repeatedly, I don't put up with that.
