I haven't been much for typing stories lately, but this day is worthy!!
Well yesterday was an interesting day for sure. As may of you know Northern Iowa has a boatload of snow and it has changed things up quite a bit. Especially with this year, almost every piece of ground I typically hunt during the second split is now tilled under! These deer up here don't know what to do with them selves.
Monday: I decided even though it was blizzard conditions, I needed to go out. I headed to a farm where I new a good one survived, and saw a few does out and about the past few days. I thought maybe the big one would be on his feet. Well, even though I graduated college last week, common sense still alludes me. I proceeded to BURY my power ranger trying to get there, and the rest of the evening was made up of the farmer plowing me a road to get me out! Its great knowing a good farmer.
HERE HE COMES!!!!
Tuesday: Well Tuesday was a bust, I had interviews all day, and was not able to make it home till nearly 300 (LOOKING FOR JOB, B.A. in Business administration:way
with a 20 minute drive to anywhere I would even consider to hunt, I packed my muzz and put on my whites and headed to some public that I have found some nice sheds on. I got to a hidden cornfield at about 4:10. LONGGG WALK, and watched deer filter in. There is a corner with standing corn and from on the ground it was tough to tell what the bucks were, I spotted a good 10 pointer at about 40 yards, but opted not to shoot, because I couldn't tell how good he was. Tall and Spindly, but I figured 130's!!
So I call my buddy Kris, and ask him if he wants to shoot a 130's with his bow, and he isn't too interested so I decided I was going to shoot this buck with my bow, and I talked kris into coming with me to film!
Wednesday:
With the excessive amounts of snow, we decided to spend the morning clearing some of kris fields out, so hopefully the deer could get some grub. We will see how it works but I dont think its going to work like we hoped!!
So a little after noon, and some much needed taco johns, I get the Toboggan out! I had got this thing ready to go because I knew with all the junk it would take to film this adventure, that I was not going to carry it all on my back! So we loaded it up. And at last minute, Kris says to me, "If we are doing all this work, I am not going to watch a big deer stand out of range while you have your bow." So I decided to pack in the muzz as well.
Well, we get in there, and Kris stand is broke, so we steal some bolts from his seat, and put the stand together... "Rigged" is the best way to describe it. We wanted to get super high, so five steps later, we are up there!!
At about four some deer start to filter in and I am ready to kill.
Those deer move on, and at about 4:30 there are another 5 coming! They appear to be all does, and then Kris spots one in the corner. Its a button, so we go back to watching the others, sure enough, I spot a buck behind the button. I said "There he is, BIG BUCK, BIG BUCK, Way bigger than I thought!!" This is no doubt the same deer I let walk the night before, but I just had no grasp on what he was due to poor light, on the ground and in standing corn!
At this time I have my bow in my hand as he enters the field at sixty yards. I practiced to 75 before we got out there, and am fulling confident at 60. No questions asked, but he is still coming, Eating and walking right to us!!
He gets to 50, still closing, and I ask Kris if he is on him, he says yes, its perfect!! I am worked up!!! So I panic.... I quickly hang up my bow, and grab the muzz. He is still closing!! And at 38 yards, I drop the hammer!!!
After an excited interview!! Kris says
"@#$#@%!#$%@$&@#$^*$^@#$%#$^#$%#^#"
He forgot to hit record!! Hahahaha. That's how it goes!! But what a blast! Great hunt and great memories! SUPER long story.... Thanks for reading.
