The wife and I set up a little trip with another friend on the site (Brandon) to work on some food plots and do some turkey hunting and fishing. The plan was to meet up last Thursday night at his uncle's cabin and spend the weekend there. Unfortunately, he couldn't meet up with us until Friday afternoon, so, Friday morning we would be on our own. The wife and I woke up at 0400 and decided to just sleep in and head out for a couple mid-morning birds. At 0645, I get a picture text from Brandon's uncle of a longbeard strutting in the road right infront of the cabin as he was headed to work. I looked out the window and couldn't see it so we decided to get up and get our gear together and see if we could find him. We had brought the guns into the cabin the night before, but the ammo and everything else was still in the truck. I go to open the front door and look outside again and there are 4 toms and some hens in the freakin front yard 30 yards away from the front door! I couldn't believe it. We waited for them to get behind the cabin (they were less than 10 yards at one point) and then we snuck out to the truck and got everything. By the time we got around the back, they had disappeared over a hill toward some ponds and one of them was already about 200 yards away and going away from us. We weren't sure exactly where they were at so we walked down along a tree line with the fan-on-a-stick. I spotted a tail fan over a rise right down by a zipline platform along one of the ponds and we were already 50 yards or so away from them. We dropped and started belly crawling toward them with the fan and two of them stepped out at 20 yards or so and we did the 1, 2, 3....boom! Mine was one of the smallest birds I had ever shot weighing 17 lbs 11 oz, 10.5" beard and 15/16" spurs. Hers was 24 lbs 12 oz, 2 beards (10" and 3") and 7/8" spurs. I would say they were both 2 year olds, but I couldn't believe the difference in weight. I also noticed that I accidentally peppered the Lifeguard sign when I shot.. lol. I felt bad at first but his uncle thought it was hilarious.
After the hunt, we proceeded to catch a bunch of giant bluegills and a nice crappie from the pond we shot the turkeys by. It was a great weekend. Thank you Brandon!
