I agree. Give it to the first fatal shot. However, there must be a gentlemans agreement for the first hunter to get it. If the DNR gets involved, they will give the tie to the last shot. Like it or not, that is the way it goes.

...By Law - whoever's tag is on the deer is the rightful owner...being that the 2nd guy only had an antlerless tag I cannot believe his would be on it!...

It sounds like there is enough info here for you to be brought in for questioning. I would stay as far away from people like that as I can. We all know the state is full of similar stories but if we have first hand knowledge of such a thing what is our responsibility? I would demand the deer either with or with out the DNR at my side. The next question is did he (your friend) know the ethics of the party before joining them on the hunt. I ask this because someone could suggest that he may have a degree of guilt in the matter. I would hammer the bone head one way or another. If we hold ourselves to high ethical standards the answers come easier. God know were all going to fail at some points. Good luck to your friend he really deserves that great trophy deer.

It's unfortunate the #2 shooter and that group operated the way they did. The first kill shot should be the one to claim this buck. I would bet money however that if you get the DNR involved they will do nothing. Since party hunting is allowed for shotgun season in Iowa and a member of this guy's group put a legal tag on the animal, I don't see that you can claim poaching here. I know it pisses you off but they did tag the buck legally.

I wouldn't bother hunting that land again myself but then I don't shotgun hunt either. Too many situations like this....

Your buddy deserves the buck no doubt. I would also bet that if it was a smaller buck the other person would have no problem giving him the deer. Its not everyday you see a deer with a drop tine let alone double drops.
 
...I have to agree with newbiedoo to an extent...I am not sure the DNR would be able to do anything in regards to getting the deer back to your friend...it is now the legal possesion of whoever's tag is on it...the DNR might be able to cite the 2nd shooter for hunting with his landowner tag on his brother's ground - though there are exceptions if he rents the ground from his brother or is the active manager of the ag ground...then again he could lie and say he shot it on his own ground and if the rest of the group backs him instead of your friend I would guess the DNR won't even bother with it...just my thoughts...

After reading this srory I doubt if the guy even owns land or leases any.Wouldn't doubt he owns five acres in the middle of nowhere and he thinks he's entitled to a landowners.
 
Definitely the 1st shooters buck!!!! Sad story that happened almost 20 years - My dad shot a huge 21 pt. NT and dropped him in his tracks. His foolish (& younger) brother ran up on the deer and kicked it over the hill. He started shooting at it and broke off tines and shot over him and almost killed some of us drivers in the next ravine. The deer stumbles down the hill in front of me and my 2 brothers. We unloaded on him and he kept going down and getting up. He finally stayed down. Anyway, my uncle claimed it was his deer and my dad paid to have it mounted and my uncle insists on keeping the mount every other year. Needless to say, he has not hunted with us since and there is no chance in hell he will ever see that mount when my dad goes to B&C heaven.
 
Bad Deal. Your friend is right. However, if it were me I would back out of the situation and mark it down as a lesson learned and move on.
 
Question on tagging deer in Iowa -

Here in Wisconsin, once you find your deer, you are immediately supposed to validate the tag and affix it to the deer (either the ear, or antlers). Failure to do so makes it an illegal deer. Thats right, according to the law, you are supposed to tag it before doing ANYTHING - take photos, field dress it, or move it, etc.

In the photos, there is no tag visible, so I was wondering if this rule is the same in Iowa.
 
Yoy are suppossed to tag the deer immediately. Im sure the tag is on the deers leg. Since when these pics were taken it was 2 hours later and at a barn where the deer was going to hang over night. But I guess I dont know for sure.
