Dove Bill Passes Senate

Critics say while considered a delicacy, mourning doves are too small to be regarded as a viable food source and they argue it would be untoward for state officially to declare open season on a bird that for many is the symbol of peace.

I got a kick out of this line.

Sen. Jeff Danielson, D-Waterloo, said he hunts pheasants but he voted no Tuesday because “I think there’s plenty of other things to hunt right now. In the grand scheme of thing, is this something that we necessarily need to do, I don’t think so.”

Sen. Tim Kapucian, R-Keystone, took a similar position in opposing the bill, saying “I just think we’ve got enough things to shoot. My mom and my wife, they said you’d better not vote for it. They’re my constituents.”

And these lines were interesting...

At least it is on its way to becoming legal!:way:

Next step is to get it through the house. I hope it continues to gain traction. It blows my mind that in an economic downturn there are those who don't support what will certainly have a positive economic impact on our bottom line....

Keep the calls and emails going, we're getting closer!

Here's who voted for what....
Yeas, 30:

Anderson, Chelgren, Hahn, Rielly, Bacon, Courtney, Hamerlinck, Smith,
Bartz, Dearden, Houser, Sodders, Behn, Dix, Johnson, Sorenson, Bertrand, Ernst, Kettering. Whitver, Black, Feenstra, Kibbie, Wilhelm, Boettger, Fraise, McKinley, Bowman, Gronstal and Ragan.

Nays, 18:

Beall, Dvorsky, Horn, Schoenjahn, Bolkcom, Greiner, Jochum, Seng, Dandekar, Hancock, Kapucian, Zaun, Danielson, Hatch, McCoy, Dotzler, Hogg and Quirmbach.

I was just getting ready to paste this! Looks like we need to send some emails to the Nay sayers. :way: Thanks for posting Thomas.

Does everyone have these peoples email addresses? Flood em all and they will get the point. Pretty sad when they are basing their opinions on what their "wife and mother" think. IMO

The Ia. Senate passed the dove bill 30-18 yesterday, sending it to the House. This opened the floodgate of opposition to the bill, mainly from HSUS (Humane Society)
We need phone calls to all House members that you strongly support this bill. We need phone calls today. Emails won't cut it, please call.
Switchboard number 515-281-3221, ask to speak to your representative.

We need to flood the capital with phone calls.

I heard that most of the doves that were interviewed were strictly against it!:D Never tasted dove but its probably comparable to pigeon?

I guess i never seen these as a game bird. I have a couple of pair that nest in my trees every year. I'm not against hunting them, just not that big of deal to me!

Most likely I'll never hunt them, but if they are hunted in all the midwest states why shouldn't Iowans join in. Once they hit the border south of here they become table fare.

They are a wingshooters dream. I've shot them in South Carolina and Texas and they are a blast. Besides the argument that "every other state can hunt them" I will also add that to me it is bigger than just having a season for them. It is about a "victory" for us as hunters, Even if you never plan to shoot one or hunt them we need this to pass to show that our voice as hunters is stronger than the Anti's. They lobby hard every year to shut this down and they have succeeded so far. IMO to many guys view this as not a big deal because "i" will probably never hunt them. The example I will compare this to is, If Obama outlawed or banned all handguns. A lot of people would say "no big deal, I don't even own one" WRONG, it is a big deal, it's about our rights as hunters and outdoorsmen and gun owners. We have to protect what we have and fight for what we don't. Maybe I'm just to passionate about my rights, but I don't think I am alone in my view point. Make the call guys!

Wrapped in bacon and grilled, they are very very very very very very tasty.

Now I've made Thomas lose his train of thought.

I truly hope it passes for all of your sakes, especially for the reasons Dedgeez states above. We have a season in AZ and I hunted them a long time ago. They do taste good, but it does take a bunch to make a meal out of them. I quit hunting them several years ago when I realized that grabbing my shotgun by the barrel and swinging at them had the same effect as me shooting at them...plus I got to keep my shells and save money. It was either that or throw my shells at them with the same results as above! Good luck lobbying!!

Shooting doves is like bluegill fishing of the hunting world. While experienced hunters can and do enjoy it fully, dove hunting offers a tremendous opportunity to get kids exposure to the outdoors and the sport of wing shooting. The conditions are comfortable, the gear is inexpensive, and there is A LOT of shooting that takes place - which is exactly what we want for an early hunting memory/experience.

@Blaster, I am with you, I may never hunt them. But its the fact that we can't based on an uneducated agenda. Every wildlife biologist out there will tell you mourning doves are classified as a game bird. The arguements against the season are purely agenda driven and its pretty sad that we are the only state in the nation with a sustained huntable population that does not have a season....

Make the call buddy, its for the future of our children's opportunities.

NOT to mention this will have a positive economic impact on Iowa. Who's against that???

Now I've made Thomas lose his train of thought.

stop it, I cant take much more...

I have been dove hunting in GA and it was an absolute blast! I thought it would be very hard and somewhat tedious to shoot Dove's but they are a blast and it's not as hard as it seems. Like others have said, it takes a few to have a meal, but there's plenty of them. No shortage.

Called my rep and he called back stating that the bill is being debated now, he thinks it will pass, but call your rep and let him know how you feel. The price for sunflower seed may be going up!!!

Just got off the phone, it only takes a minute!

We are really close guys! PLEASE DO IT NOW!!!
