Downwind ?

So if you know what a buck is doing and there are other people hunting him, would you go and hunt him if he would come out downwind at 100 yards?? If the wind is 1 mph??

would they smell you in the morning, when the thermals are rising, flat ground?

Knowing my luck Nick, he'd nail me in a second! I have tried to exclusively hunt the wind no matter what and have done so much better. I think it's better to err on the side of caution. Good luck man!!

If you were the only one hunting him id be patient, but with competition I'd go for broke and test your luck....otherwise someone will screw him up b4 you get a crack....really depends on all the other variables.

Im assuming bow hunting so....... take a chance. I did that this year and had the best hunt of my life, deer took a different path then I have seen in the past. Surprised the heck out of me.

I hunted a south wind stand with a north wind...

Once you think you have them figured out... that is when they have you right where they want you. IMO

There would probably be a better chance of him not smelling you if the wind was really blowing, as opposed to it taking your scent to him slow and stedy.

On a side note, I thought thermals were a mountain thing. Is there a such thing here?

I believe there are thermals everywhere. just the truly significant ones happen in hills and valleys (and mountains). I may be way off. I just figured thermals are from air heating and rising or cooling and falling.... sooooo with like basically no wind, they should have some affect..???

I have a lot of theories.. I could write a book... The only problem is it doesnt take much to prove them wrong /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I think you are thinking to hard about the situation.... Just go and hunt the dang deer man...

You sound like me when I was after a certain deer, cant hunt there because of this and that.... then I sat there and it was the only time I seen him. Wind was wrong and everything, just took the farthest trail that I couldnt cover.

no I did go hunt him.. He came through. and I let him walk. I thought he was bigger than what he was. This ? was about this morn.

I'd go for it in a low wind for sure. I'm a huge fan of obsessive scent control and have gotten away with murder this year with greater winds than that. Wash the body, hair and clothes in scent free soap/shampoo and spray all my clothes down with Scent Killer by Wildlife Research. There's something about that particular spray that WORKS. I also like my stands at around the 25 foot elevation and it goes without saying, rubber boots.

I asked this question tuesday night, wondering if I should hunt this buck this morning. So i went out and it all worked out, and i passed on him.
