I don't know much about such things, but it seems unlikely to me that all these mountain lions in Iowa could have just strayed there on their own. I don't know whether I buy the DNR conspiracy theory, but I think its just as likely that some "nut" released some on his own. I just don't think that many cats could just "show up" so quickly.
 
Not sure what you mean by showing up so quickly. Mt Lions have been around for a long time. I am kinda impressed they haven't wondered into Iowa any sooner. Plus they have been located quite aways apart. I think if somebody let some go on his own they would be around one area more.
 
I have a lake house just south of Centerville, on a lake in unionville Mo, there have been a few sightings of Cougars, yes cougars, they have always had bobcats and mtn lions down there, we actuallty found some tracks outside our lakehouse that were rather large, with 3 pad prints in the track? Does that sound right?
