EHD/blue tongue

Found my first dead doe by the pond today. Was not there a week ago. Not near a road and no trama other than hind quarters eaten. Close to lake ahquabi in warren county.
 
Have found 2 dead deer by pond in last few days. Neighbor has found a couple. We're in NW MO. NE KS has alot of dead deer being found. Kind of sad.
 
Checked 3 ponds and a good portion of my creek last week. Did not find anything....this is Mercer County, MO 2 miles from IA line (Wayne County) and close to Decatury County as well.
 
Just got a call from conservation agent in Shelby county about a doe I shot Saturday, asked if I saw any other dead deer, said there are numerous reported cases in the area, sucks
 
I saw one laying by a pond about 10 miles south of Indianola off of highway 65 the weekend before last.

Killing the midge will help settle my mind, drought sucks but deer will move to find water. This year my stands will be near water. I do agree with an earlier post about depredation tags. The DNR needs to go evaluate these farms, I will bet most have food plots and are trying to draw deer. They should only be allowed tags if they open their farms up to public hunting. Why should they be able to try getting the deer there but then get free tags to eliminate less than desired deer. I know in some cases that they actually need them, but the DNR could sell $11 tags to shoot does for that too.

personally, I think the lack of lengthy cold winters, and global warming are having effects on some of these diseases that are exploding this year.


However, I have to admit the numbers of deaths from ehd now is staggering and frightening. that’s why I came here to post on this thread today. I too am deeply concerned about ehd on the cervid population, and have been following it. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) continues to kill deer across Nebraska, with over 4,768 reported deaths attributed to the disease in the past few weeks. The acute, infectious, viral disease is often fatal and is spread by biting flies called midges, sand flies, or sand gnats. Not to be confused with bluetongue, a similar hemorrhagic disease seen throughout North American, as the two are antigenically different.


Although the disease has been around for decades, (with the earliest reports dating back to 1886), this years' outbreak seems to be significant according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
South Dakota has also attributed over 900 unexplained deer deaths since September to EHD.
The EHD seems to primarily affect the white-tail deer population, although cases have been reported in mule deer, bighorn sheep, elk, pronghorn and even cattle.
