Elk near Harpers Ferry, NE Iowa.

Was forwarded an email from a family member about some elk near Harpers Ferry. A bull and two cows, the email states the DNR shot the cows. Anyone know anything about this? I’m sure there’s an explanation.

They took some pictures of the bull, now if I can only figure out how to attach a .jpg...

Not sure how they got there but they've been seeing them since turkey season. A couple elk farms in that area.

Here's the pic I promised. The stuff in the elks antlers is hay bale covering tarp/twine/???.

If these are the same 3 elk, then Harpers is a bit far north. The one's that I know of are just off of B45 between Marquette and Monona. I work with several of the landowners who have had run-ins with them and several pics. Sounds like a game farm had an escape and do not want to admit it. Did not hear about the DNR shooting any of them yet tho....

I know the area well. I know where the elk have been hanging. I dought the DNR shooting the cows story though. Unfortunatly it wouldn't surprise me if the bull's body turns up someday with no head.

How long they been loose? I know they wouldn't last long around here, some of the local boys would be having elk on the grill.

I may have been mistaken. A co-worker this morning told me the DNR did shoot the cows because of complaints of crop damage. A big bull and a calf are still walking around.

I wonder what the DNR did with the meat from the cows?

You'd think if they were farmed elk, they'd have ear tags. Maybe not though.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll be reading about it in the paper... poached bull elk.

I thought this was a pretty odd story so I asked Willie Suchey about these elk, here's what he said:

Here is what I know about the elk:
There are a minimum of 3 elk (1 bull, 2 cows) loose just north of the
Allamakee/Clayton county border near Yellow River State Forest.
There have been multiple complaints from the public (both public safety and
crop complaints).
The public safety of an individual is of concern since the bull elk follows
him when he walks near his house.
The bull elk has been photographed on more than one occasion up to the
individuals house deck knocking over potted flowers.
The Department of Ag has been consulted by Wildlife Bureau Chief Dale Garner.
The decision was made to remove the elk due to public safety and the potential
transmission of diseases.
The elk meat will be processed and given to the Luster Heights Correctional
Facility.
Tissue samples will be collected for disease testing.
There were 2 cow elk killed by a DNR conservation officer on August 2nd, both
had ear tags. The bull has not showed up again but we will attempt to kill it
as well. Attached is a picture of the bull.

I used to work for the state of Iowa, and I delivered food to all the state institutions, including Luster Heights. You have no idea how good these prisioners eat.
