Estimating bucks on trail cameras

After coming in close contact with a buck previously caught on camera, do you find yourself under judging or over judging the size of his rack from the picture?

It is almost ALWAYS over judging!! They look so much bigger in the photos. I watch bucks regularly in the evenings with my binoculars and when I get trail cam shots they always look way bigger. I think the excitement of getting the picture makes us think they are bigger than they really are.

I would agree that I probably tend to over judge and I think most people do also. That said, I guessed this buck at 143" and he ended up 142" on the ground. In that case though I had about a dozen nice pics and some video to judge by, and probably got lucky as well. I actually didnt recognize him when I shot him (in a big hurry), but I would have still shot him if I had. At the time I shot him I would have guessed him bigger. That buck is the only one I've killed with photos to with it. Good question though!

I'm terrible at judging a buck in velvet, cam pic or no. Anyomore I think I tend to score them lower then they really are.
You had yours pegged though TP!

the last two years I have killed bucks I have pics of. One of the bucks I overjudged big time, but the other I actually guessed him quite a bit under what he actually was.I think overjudging is common, but I have had pics of deer that Ive well documented that had I not known better Id of guessed em about 20 inches low.Obviously camera angle can make a 150 look like a 170 or a 130.

Thanks for the input. I found this bucks year old shed this spring. I guessed him at 145 to 150. The right side scored 72 inches with a few tips chewed on. I under scored him by a good 10 inches.
