Love the fawn pics.

I plan to plant some of the chestnut hybrids this year...any idea how those transplants will do coming from up north to TN?

letemgrow is the expert on chestnut trees so I'll let him answer that question and one of my own.;)

Do you have to stake the chestnuts Phil? Looks like you have rebar or something holding up that American chestnut?

The first chestnuts I planted all got killed by rabbits so I need to try it again using tubes or protective wire around them.

Great trees!

I would imagine the chestnuts would do pretty well coming from TN. Mine came from the ACCF in WV. I have the rebar there to keep the tree upright until it takes on its own. It grew out of the tube 2 years ago, but for some reason this year the leaves are too much for the main stem so it leaned over. Must have been the fertilizer I gave it this spring :)

I look for that tree to flower this june or possibly next. If you do tube chestnuts I would use the largest diamater tube you can find. I have enough tubes to double up using the 7 inch diamater tubes to make them 14 which is plenty of room for the tree to grow tall and strong instead of spindly. If you have some hog wire fence or hardward cloth it would be far cheaper for you to go that route instead of the tubes.

I have re-used the tubes I have for the past 3 years and they are still in good shape so that cuts down on their actual cost. They will accelarate growth quite a bit, but be careful with them. Make sure they are VERY well vented so there is good air flow for the seedlings to harden off in the fall and keep the grass killed around the tubes so rodents will not find them inviting or they will eat all the bark inside the tube.

I reckon you have a deer paradise there!!! Awesome pics!

It's basically a baby making factory :) , the bucks will not show up until mid-late October and then they come out of the woodwork!!! Tons of does are there year round.
