Favorite time to hunt

Late season is beginning to grow on me. If you got food it can be dynamite, if not you might be riding the strugglebus.

Frigid cold will test your gear though, I got to the stand yesterday and my release was covered in snow.. brushed it off and didn't think anything of it. Got all settled in, nocked an arrow and started to pull back my bow to check everything out and my release wouldn't hold. I got snow in the internals which had melted and refroze and I couldn't get it out. Scrambling and with deer showing up I grabbed my multi tool from my pack and used a fine point to pick the ice out. My release started to work, but I was paranoid all night that I would punch myself in the face drawing back on my target buck. .

I love late season if we get cold and snow. A mature whitetail buck in the snow is an exciting site to see. More often than not the weather is fairly warm through Iowa's late season and the hunting is pretty ho-hum. I'll be hunting the next few days and I'm excited by the conditions even though I'd prefer it a little colder and the snow a little deeper. I try it every year regardless but I'm way more deadly in November.

OCTOBER for ME!!!! Next…. Cold & late.

I dont think I can quite make this statement but im
TRENDING this direction “my least favorite is November/rut”. I still like it cause it’s “fun & action packed” …. So i won’t make that statement. But- not when I have the most success, I for sure can say that. This is 180 degrees different than 10-20 years ago. All I did back then was wait for Rut.
