Goin with Alta-Swede Mamoth red clover then rye grain in my 1/3 acre plot. Alta-Swede was the least expensive but I'm a little concerened that my plans my not work. I will frost seed it sometime this week then keep it mowed to about 6-8 inches until the end of June then clip it to normal lawn height for the FBO. After that I'll let it grow until August then plow it under and plant the rye.

This is what Welters catalog says: Alta-Swede Mammoth Red Clover is a "single cut" clover. (Only one crop of Mammoth Red Clover is harvested each season since recovery is slow.) It will be taller and coarser than Medium Red Clover and is about 2 weeks later in maturity. It is used primarily as a green manure crop.

So I may be wasitng my time and money by trying to keep it mowed, but I'm gonna try it. Worst thing is I'm out 16 bucks, best thing is I'll be trying something new for me.

Cool, take lots of progression pics and let us know how your plan works out. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Just clip the tops if it starts to flower rather then mowing it close. It works great! I've been planting Alta Swede Red Clover for quite a few years now doing exactly as you plan to. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif
