Finally found my 9 point!!!

On October 6 i shot a 120-130 inch 9 point. Couldn't where the arrow hit, and when i got to the spot where I shot him there was hair on the ground and on my arrow had was a bunch of fat on it! There was no blood for whats so ever on the arrow. Then about 40 yards from where i shot we found some blood, after that we found a couple of other spots of blood but then i went cold!! the total blood trail was probably 125 yards long. So we came to the conclusion that i shot high in no mans land just under the spine!!! So i came the next day to just walk around the farm and see if i could find the buck, didnt find him. So i let it go and kept on hunting. I had some cool encounters with some really good deer but couldnt get them to come within range, then on October 27th probably 30 minutes before dark 3 does came running into the soybean field that i was hunting over. then a nice buck came out. i started glassing him and it was the 9 point i shot in early October. He started pushing the does around the field. I could see where i shot the buck, we were right, the shot placement was right under the spine. The does started coming my way but i never got a shot at him, he was 60 yards out (to far). i was just re leaved that the buck was ok and it looked like there was no harm done to him. Im just glad he is still alive and not dead where i cant find him!!! :)

That's good to hear. Def been there and no fun not knowing.

A good tip though is that you can't shoot under the spine and NOT hit lungs. There is no void. It just isnt possible. You likely hit ABOVE the spine, as it lays much lower than most think. The spine does dip down as it approaches the neck, but otherwise if you are under it, you get lungs.

I only tell you this so that should you shoot one "under the spine" one day, you will know you at least got the upper part of the lungs. Above though, like your buck, is as good possibility they will survive.

I will beg to differ with you on that. I personally know of three deer that have been killed. One by me and two by a friend of mine. These three deer were killed by a "knicked artery" that runs under the spine. On all three deer the lungs were not cut by the broadhead. They all three went down within 100 yards, but the lungs weren't cut at all. The partially cut artery is what killed them. I know....it is impossible but I have seen it first hand...not once but 3 times.

Perhaps I should say there is no "dead space" under the spine, and I guess a projectile could brush against and fail to severe them, or do so mildly. Definitely each case is different.

That artery (dorsal aorta) that runs under the spine will eventually fork and become the two femorals I believe. In either case, when cut they will kill them faster than a heart shot :)
