I used to use plaster of paris but got tired of the time waiting for it to dry, the sanding, etc. Now I use a mixture that a taxidermist I used to work for gave me the recipe for...it's gypson casting plaster, paper pulp, a little yellow dextrine glue, with the right amount of water mixed in to give it a nice paste mixture. I love this stuff...when mixed correctly you can form it all you want, it doesn't move, you can keep adding to it, and basically build the form any way you want. Let it sit overnight and it's rock hard the next day and ready to mount, unlike the plaster that could take days to dry so it could be sandable.
