fixed broadheads blades vs. expandable broadheads

I just wanted to know which kind of broadhead you guys thought were better. Right now i have G5 Montec broadhead and it seems sometimes when i shoot a deer the blood trail isn't very big. My friend has got the Rage 2 blade broadhead and he says the bood trail is huge. So i was just wondering if the expandable broadheads are better then the fixed blade broadheads or what are your thoughts?

I think it depends on your shot. If you hit them right behind the shoulder where your suppose to it won't matter what you shoot you'll have a good blood trail. You you have the tendacy to get to nervous or make marignal shots it sounds like the rage is the one to go with. I myself am kinda tired of hearing about them so I'll stick to my muzzy's.

This is the first year I have hunted exclusively with fixed blades. One doe with a NAP Rasorback, poor shot good blod dead deer. Two with the Shutle T Loc, 40 yards dead deer. Two years ago I killed my first four deer of the season with the two blade Rage and gave the heads way. Great blood, flawed design. I don't want to deal with a flaw when the big one walks out. There are some quality expandables out there. I love the Rocket Steelheads.

I myself switched to expandables because I was having trouble getting consistant shots with the fixed blades. Call it lazy way out or what ever, but I was just starting out in bowhunting and needed a quick fix and they did the trick. I did not have allot of knowledge of how to tune everything nor did I have allot of time or money to go to a proshop and have things done. Was a great boost to my confidence in the tree stand that I knew my arrow was going to fly right to where I wanted it. I wounded and lost 2 good bucks with the Muzzy's I was shooting back then, to taking 2 nice bucks, 1 small buck and 8 does over the last 3 years. IMO you need to shoot what makes you comfortable and makes sense. Most of the products out there now are good quality.

yah sounds like the expandable broadheads are pretty good. Ive shot some nice deer with my fixed blade broadheads but some of the deer Ive shot have gotten away. Wat do you think the best expandable broadhead are right now?

I personaly like Grim Reapers, but most of my friends shoot Rage.

I think they both have some issues.

It all depends on what you like.

I think they are both good heads and will get the job done with good shot placement.

Killer Buck... what poundage are you shooting? If you go with an expandable be cautious with large diameter multiple blade heads if you are shooting under 65lbs. Very difficult to get pass thru penetration with large diameter, multiple blade heads.... especially if you contact any bone. Try to check out the fairly recent Bowhunting World magazine from a couple months back. They had a very good expandable broahead test in that issue that was well done with several broadheads. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I shoot a low weight bow so I like my Montec G2's because I know how they fly with my setup and I don't have to worry about weather it will open or not.

Slick Tricks. Field point flight with replaceable fixed blades. Nasty results and very high pass through percentage. Best of all worlds IMO.

I have been shooting the Rage heads with great success. i was shooting Snypers before that. I guess that Rage has changed the design a little bit and have read a few reviews that the change was for the better...?? I don't know what the change is or why it was made, I replaced the blades in the ones I have from last year and am just waiting for a good target to fling them at. Good luck

I'm shooting Magnus Buzzcuts now. I can't believe how good they fly. They fly as good or better then my expandables! Now i just need to see how they do for putting a deer down!

I know this is an old thread but I couldn't resist putting in my $.02. I've seen the Wasp Jackhammers blow through bone and exit on the other side. I was hunting with my buddy in Dec. We were walking out of the woods early as we hadn't seen any deer all day and a button buck walked out 30 yards in front of us. My friend couldn't help himself. Let one fly out of his Drenalin at #62 and it hit shoulder and went completely through. Full blade deployment and everything was intact (although slightly bent). Deer went 25 yards and crashed. LOTS of blood. Impressed the heck out of me. Might even try some this year.
