Flying with a firearm

Has anyone flown recently and checked a long gun? Specifically Delta? Email, online chat, phone chat...I can't get a straight answer on gun case size limits and cost. I can find on the online calculator that a "speciality sports equipment firearm" is just $30; no mention of weight or dimensions. If not speciality equipment, oversized baggage is $340 ONE WAY for the case size I plan to bring. Customer service is unable to tell me what I'll be paying. Thank you for experience if you have it!

Just flew to Anchorage AK on United and return trip on Alaska Air with a rifle and my case is a skb- very big and heavy duty. Can’t say for sure what it weighed but if I recall I paid like $80 at the check in counter for it. Make sure you have TWO padlocks on it and ammo in a separate checked bag. I know that doesn’t answer all your specific questions but hope it helps a little.

Be careful on the ammo in same or different bag. Different airlines have different rules. I've had it required in different bag and required in the same locked case. Sorry. Not much help. On cost.
My last time.was oversees on united out of Chicago. Had my bow and gun in a double rifle case. I was charged as my second bag.
Once I told the ticket agent I had the gun I had an employee escort me all the way through security. Fastest I've ever been through. They had me take it out of the case and show it was not loaded. Boy does that get a lot of funny looks!

I went to AK this past September as well. On the way up we flew Delta out of Moline. I have a Pelican Vault double gun case. It's big. I removed some of the foam layers and had that thing stuffed to the 50 pound limit. Besides rifle and ammo I had all my blades, trexxing pulls, small saw and other ods and ends. My rifle was in a soft case and I used clothes to make up for the foam removed. I just paid standard bag fee.

Flying out the people really had no clue. Asked to see rifle and ammo in box gave me my inspection slip and off I went. I have read long gun ammo in case with rifle is fine but hand gun ammo needs to be in separate case. Several buddies had hand guns with ammo in their rifle case and no one said anything about it. That goes for flying home out of Fairbanks where they knew their stuff at the counter.

It was a great first trip to AK. Only thing missing was a dead moose. Saw moose everyday but one but only one bull was legal and we never could get close. I'll do a post about it at some point.

Was my first trip as well. Took my dad and son, 3 generations- an awesome adventure. Incredible country isn’t it? God really took his time up there when he created that. Humans haven’t screwed it up yet either for the most part. Were you on your own or did u have a guide? We hunted with a native family up there, great people. Almost took my bow but figured this was a once in a lifetime trip and wanted to give myself every chance I could to kill a moose. I ended up killing a really a good one. 73 1/2”, couple drop tines and a dagger out the front. Killed a caribou as well. Son got a black bear, dad killed a great moose too. Came close a couple times to getting on a grizzly but couldn’t catch up to him. Great memories that we’ll have forever.
