food or no food?

Perhaps I missed it, but the land owner is OK with you planting food plots?

Havent spoke with him yet..wanted to see what everyones thoughts and ideas were before i went to him...but i wouldnt do it without getting the nod from the land owner

I'd for sure do Paul's cereal grain mix. Radishes would be good for the time frame that you are hunting the farm.

What is the timber? Predominately oaks? Those are going to be hard to beat on big mast years, especially during the times you are hunting. Cattle are going to pound any plots you plant come late season so the deer will not see much usage I doubt come December on.

I am unsure about the timber as of yet...cold temps have kept the scouting limted to staring out the pickup window...I understand about the cattle in the late season but im just looking for during bow season and whatever happens to the plot after bow season then so be it

I have lots of good open ground but cant find anyone to plant beans. I had 20 bags that never got planted last year. As for greens I have lots of alfalfa and now need something to put deer in the exact spot I need them. I will admit that the deer may need time to get used to the turnips. If I had good food I'd be on fire right now.

My experience was it took 2 years for the deer to be accustom to turnips as food. The third year and ever since they have crushed it. I've used big n Beasty, tall time tubers, custom mix and evolved harvest. The evolved harvest is what they prefer on my place.

Clover is also a must for a year around food source. People think the deer aren't using it because utilization is tough to tell, but trust me it's the thing is choose if I could only have one thing.

If you have free reign to put these things in I'd recommend consulting with a experienced bowhunter on the best place to install the plots. You could have the best plot in the county but it won't produce a deer if it's in the wrong spot. You have to think like the deer. Would you use it during daylight, where do truly bed, how close is water, can you get in and out without detection.

So many variables! Good luck though because doing this stuff is just as fun as the hunt IMO!

Do you have access to equipment? You will need it to do all of Pauls. How big of an area you lookin to do?

Throw and grow on roundup sprayed ground can work without any tillage. I've sprayed right after broadcasting in fescue sod with great results. At the very least, he could put in winter rye by simply broadcasting and see some good results.

Winter rye and radish/rape seeds work the best for this. Groundhog radishes will work if they get plenty of rain since they are a bigger seed.

Equipment does help guarantee better germination, but plots can be done without equipment if need be.

Good idea. Tell him what you want to plant them ask him if he has a preference for what you plant based on his cattle. Good for you, good for him.
