Food plot progress

Southcentral.. how long ago did you plant your brassica mix? If you put it in too early then it will mature too early and rot.. smells like a landfill. Otherwise maybe it drowned out and died and then rotted?

I put it in the 1st and 2nd week of August for most of it. I dressed up the low bare spots 2 weeks ago. Now that's up and dying. All I can figure is too much water. But any input would be much appreciated. I've been putting in brassicas on my farms for over 5 years. I am by no means a n expert but I do have experience.

sounds like water problem to me? I planted a plot of radish and rape last of july. It is mature but no rotting.

Any chance of residual chemicals? What was planted previously?

Are these brassica's on the same plot as you have had been doing for the last 5 years? If they are, very good chance that disease has moved in. With Brassica's, crop rotation is a must.

Thanks for all the input. A couple of the fields have had it in same mix for a few years. I just started this year implementing the cereal grain mix. Will it be ok on the disease possibility if it is out of brassicas next fall and in the following year or should I leave it out for a couple years.

1 year will be fine. If you can you still have time for cereal grains and clover and you could put back in next fall or start the rotation.

I just lost my best looking plot to what has to be too much water. It literally is GONE. What is left has purple tips and it had little to no weeds like 3 weeks ago. Today, can hard find and places where the brassicas remain lots of weeds. Sucks!

We are going to be pounded again tomorrow- making me worry a little bit for the side I recently planted- headed down this Saturday AM to check new progress and make sure im not going to run into the same problem as Skyleralan.............

Yeah, weather pattern doesn't look good! I already ordered my rye for one plot hope I don't have to do it for the other one!

I just overseed rye into one of my turnip plots that sits on some bottom ground, they did not like the standing water. Something about getting 14 inches of rain in a 3 week window. The clover next to that plot is looking outstanding.

Too bad,,where in SE Iow?. My area has got sufficient but not too much at all. Guess I must have the only drier area of Iowa.

I think you'll be alright with the new stuff we planted. It should have germinated by now so the seed wont wash away. They rye will grow damn near anywhere. It probably wont help the brassicas any though.

I will be sure to post updated pictures after being there- hopefully the report is good! (as well as a great trail camera pull:) )

Just got back from checking on the plots and they are doing great for getting pounded with rain- pretty happy with them!

Plot looks great! I'm Jelous right now..mine looked awesome mid Aug. went to plant cereal mix Aug 29 and brassicas started to look a little yellow and stressed. On Friday I threw down some 25-00-10 partial slow release nitrogen on it. Spread it in the rain and rained all day after. If nitrogen wasn't the culprit (which I actually think it was too much precip) then at least I tried. Fertilized the plots pretty well while planting, have some huge turnips and radishes but the leaves are lacking now. But not a total bust at this point as they will have plenty of bulbs for winter.

Was in the area yesterday so I thought I would take a look- Oats and Rye and coming in awesome- the brassicas are still doing well
