From the Iowa DNR:

Wisconsin Man Injured in Hunting Incident in Jackson County

ST. DONATUS - A Wisconsin man was injured while hunting deer Sunday morning in Jackson County near St. Donatus.

Kevin Bourland, 37, of Hazel Green, WI, was helping a friend locate a deer that had been shot the previous day. A 20-gauge shotgun that had been propped against a tree began to fall and when Bourland reached for the gun to catch it, the gun fired hitting him in the thumb with a deer slug.

Bourland was taken to Finley Hospital in Dubuque where he was being treated for his non-life threatening injury.

Burlington Man Injured While Hunting Sunday

BURLINGTON - A Burlington man was injured Sunday morning after being struck by a deer slug in his leg while hunting in rural Des Moines County near Prairie Grove.

James Nelson, 40, was hunting with his son, Zach, 14, when both shot at a deer running between them. A shot fired by Zach struck James in the upper left thigh. The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

James Nelson was transported by ambulance to the Great River Medical Center in Burlington.

Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Joe Fourdyce said most incidents that occur during deer season happen when hunters are firing at running deer.

"It is very important for hunters to know what is behind the animal before they fire. It is also very important to know exactly where everyone in your hunting party is at all times. If you are a hunter and are moving your position, you need to let the others that you are hunting with know that you have moved," said Fourdyce.

Louisa County Man Injured While Hunting Sunday

BURLINGTON - A Columbus Junction man was injured Sunday morning after his shotgun discharged while hunting near Wapello.

Luis Jaramillo, 47, had just left his deer stand at the Indian Slough Wildlife Area northwest of Wapello, when his shotgun discharged as he was unloading it hitting him the lower part of the left leg and foot. The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Jaramillo was taken by helicopter to University of Iowa hospitals in Iowa City.

New Hampton Man Injured While Hunting Sunday

NEW HAMPTON - A missed shot at a running deer resulted in a New Hampton man being injured while hunting Sunday in Chickasaw County.

Lynn Pacovsky, 48, of New Hampton, was field dressing a deer on the edge of a corn field southwest of New Hampton when Brian Tenge, 34, of Mt. Auburn took a shot at a running deer. The shot missed the deer striking Pacovsky in the back late Sunday afternoon.

Pacovsky was taken to Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton than transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

I have nothing against people who shoot at running deer, who am I to tell someone how to hunt. It just seems though that more bad things happen when hunters don't take their time and assess the situation properly. Here in Ohio where I live a lot of people do deer drives in groups, I am waiting for more reports like this to come in our area. Just hope they don't.

It's one thing to accidentally shoot yourself, but i hope the other two guys are doing well. Looks like the father got shot by his son and the other poor fellow got shot in the back while he was field dressing a deer. That can't be good.

I personally know the guy that was shot in the back from New Hampton. I know the whole hunting group actually. I do know all the details, and he is up in Rochester in intensive care, as the slug went through a kidney and liver and lodged up in the sternum.

That doesn't sound good, hope he recovers quickly.
