"Frost Seeding"

Here's an easy test to see if your switchgrass needs stratification. Get a small amount of potting soil and a pot, pan, or tray of some sort. Plant some seeds in the potting soil about 1/4" deep. Wet the potting soil and let it sit in the warm house by a window. You will have sprouts coming up in a few days if the seed is ready to be field planted.

This is how I test mine. I get my seed from Osenbaugh around Nov. - Dec. I let it set in the shed where it's cold all winter. It almost always comes up when I do this test. That is why I'm not afraid to drill it late spring. Another advantage to planting late spring is I can get at least one Roundup/Atrazine spraying in before planting.

This is what works for me.
